  • New Key Needed... $400

mmm my child minder lost the key!! $400 to replace (and $1,000 if you lose the second one and have to recode the whole system).

Any idea whether you can buy the fob elsewhere and have it recoded (like off the net etc)... I can't risk taking the only key we have surfing now!!!

What about on fleabay? I recall that soemone picked up a key for a 120 off fleabay for less that $100. They just needed it cut and coded which I believe they had done for a relativerly good price, well under $400.

The $400 was from the dealer... It' a grand if you lose both with their coding for a single new one!

I organised a 3rd key from and alternate car manufacturer, they charged $260 and required all three keys to sync them to the same code sets

Consider $400.00 is about normal for modern "smart keys", Holden, Ford the same, think BMW/Mercedes/Audi, now your serious at $800.00.

                    Re: New Key Needed... $400

I suddenly feel like being a bit more careful with my keys. I have seen some silicone key covers for some other brands. Has anyone seen any that suit the 150 keys?

                      Re: New Key Needed... $400

i had to get a key for a barina, so bought 1 off ebay (cant remember accurate prices but around $10 for flip out style) then took key to local hardware who first cut a standard blank, used that to test it worked in door then tried ignition. it will fit and turn over engine if it is cut correctly. they then knew the blank was cut correctly and cut the new flip out i supplied. [its an expensive error to just try cut your new key blank and do it wrong. they say all care but no responsibility. be careful!] I then bought the electronic module bit for inside blank from 1 dealer who was the cheapest after many calls and then took same key and module to another local holden dealer who programmed it for around $40-50. it was definately under $100 this way. also the hardware gave us the steel blank so daughter had a spare just to open car in case she ever locked rest of the keys in it, cheers

I live in Nairobi, Kenya and drive a 2003 Toyota Prado TZ imported from Japan.

The key with the "L" on it cracked when I started it. I crazy glued it back together but have purchased a new key(with a circle on it) for about 5,000KSH($50) from Toyota East Africa. I didn't buy a new black key(with an "L" on it) because it was selling for 33,000KSH($330).

I have had the new key cut. I tried to start the engine and no luck. The chip must be recoded. Toyota wants close to 10,000KSH($100) to do it.

I heard there is a way to code the key in the car using the brake pedal and gas pedal.

Does anyone know if this is possible?

If so, has anyone done this in their Prado?

                        Thanks,

                        Zamy

                          Zamy,

Check out this link. It is a way of reprograming the chip for the 90 series (it worked on my 90 series) not sure if it will work on your model.
