  • Why a 150 over the others available ?

Ok im already a very happy prado owner, i have a 2004 GX with no "help" and i have managed better than most nearly every trip apart from only on a couple of occasions have i failed to clear an obstacle .... everyone else did too BTW I knew this day was coming so have resisted adding lockers, my current vehicle is a V6 petrol and i really want a Diesel for towing my camper... and Auto so the missus can be designated driver.

There are a few other manufacturers out there offering arguably better prices on 4WD's with the same spec but im a Toyota man .

I have tossed up the getting a new 70 series GXL or a secondhand 2008'ish 200 series GXL cruiser with low k's and a serious underbody inspection . Now im swaying back towards home .

I have seen a few beautifully done up vehicles here on the build up thread and im nearly set on a newbie .

Im just wondering why many others here have upgraded from the 120 to the 150 and not chosen another vehicle ?

I have searched through the threads and there are similar but no one has asked this specific question as far as i can see.

    Thanks 8)

For me the Prado is a good size for all things we do. The 200 is too big for a car that still has to drive to work on Monday and park at the shops on Tuesday.

      Hi,

I recently went through the decision process on what to buy.

I ended up with the 150 but also seriously considered a near new Discovery 3 and a new Pajero. I couldn't think of any other real contendors that were not based on a ute chassis.

The Disco is a great bit of kit but I was worried about costs when it ran out of warranty, the Pajero was also good, with a fantastic warranty but I wasn't convinced in the build quality and fully independant suspension, plus I thought the engine was noisy!

The 150 won because of (in my opinion)

: Simpler (and thus easier/cheaper to fix than the Disco)
: Solid rear end and seperate chassis. (Better than the monocoque of the Pajero
      : Extra fuel tank
: Better interior build quality than the Pajero
: Lots of after market gear... eventually

The 150 isn't faultless but it ticked most of the boxes I needed.

Exactly what he said....Plus an equal specced Disco4 HSE came in at 124k and up to 11 months for delivery so I bought the Kakadu for 84k driveway and a 2008 off road Windsor rapid for 32k leaving 8k change for whatever mods tickle me fancy.
2010 Kakadu with all the usual stuff.... Build up thread below

To me the deciding factor would still come down to support in the regional areas -
heck we were staying at Kerang, north Victoria the other day, quite a small town, and there was a Toyota workshop there.
How far would you have to go to find a Land Rover workshop ? ( I think there's something in Albury )
          Cheers, Wayne

            Simple for me,

Wife didn't like the look of Pajero, and we couldn't strech to afford a Disco4, add the discount for Toyota Fleet through work and the decision was made. For us the Navara's, Challangers and Patrols were not suitable thus never in the race.

We could have purchased a Disco 3, but I have been warned of the unreliability issues so many times, that they have to be true !

Hi, I had a 2008 GXL Diesel 200 series and sold it recently. I bought a new V6 Kakadu and have to say the 200 was a far better vehicle. I changed because of size and features but now regret it, you soon get used to the size of the 200 and it doesn't have the spare wheel sticking out the back so length is not that much different. The 200 series feels a far more solid vehicle that the Prado.
