Ok, the main reason we have them here is to protect the dash from the sun.
    ( well that's the reason I got mine )
If you leave your car in the sun, here in Australia, the dash plastic gets very hot. This can cause fading, warping and cracking of the plastic.
It also protects a bit from sctratches. And is handy for hiding cables for GPS /SatNav etc under.
Not everyone likes them. But it does help with resale vlaue I guess, the same reason you have seat covers,
    Cheers, Wayne

I have also found it helps with the glare too, not so much on the Prado because the dash is a matt plastic, but on other cars when the dash is shiny you get a good hit of glare coming off it.

The mat also helps keep under the dash cool and this in turn helps the AC, specially up here in NQ. My has 2 cut outs that need to be removed before install that allow the alarm light to be seen and the sensor thats up on the dash.

Good news. The old mat was not the right one and a new mat provided at my 1000km service on Friday:

Drivers side - no spare cut-out or curved edge:

How it looks across the whole dash:

          Passenger Side:

Interestingly (and surprisingly) to me is the flap/extension of the dash mat over the entire passenger side dash...given the airbag, I thought that the mat would not extend over the full dash? I guess given it is a "flap" that it will not interfere with deployment of aribags :?:

Re: 150 Series Toyota Dash Mat

Dashboards are made from plastics which release chemical fumes when heated up. Ever wondered why the inside of the windscreen glass, above the dash, gets dirty/hard to see through? Having a dash mat helps reduce this, as well as preventing the dash from sun damage.

Had to fit it myself but bought mine from Mandurah Toyota for $45. (including GST, in case anyone was going to ask)
They told me it only comes in dark grey but that suits me fine.

Re: 150 Series Toyota Dash Mat

                    Hello Gents
I sent an email to toyota directly, regarding the dash mat, after the dealer told me toyota do not make one for the 150.
Toyota replied saying the dealer is correct, they do not supply a dash mat for the 150.
                    So there is no original.
Can someone send me a pic of the Haigh type?
                    cheers

                      Hello Again Gents
Looking at the Haigh type, it looks like it would scratch the dash?
Also I assume you instal the velcro sections? Doesn't this also mark the dash?
                      Feedback appreciated.
                      cheers

Not sure how they say that they don't provide one, when I have one purchased through the Toyota Dealer here in WA (Prosser). See my photos.

Cost of my mat was ~$80

                          Hello Cambo
I was pretty keen to try a mat out, and first went to the dealer, and then toyota (as per below )-

                          "Dear Sir,
Thank you for contacting Toyota Customer Experience Centre.
In relation to your email regarding your Toyota 150 series Prado, we can confirm that a geniune dash mat is not available for this vehicle.
Thank you for contacting Toyota and allowing us the opportunity to respond.
                          Kind Regards
                          Jessica Bosden

                          Customer Experience Centre
                          Toyota Motor Corporation Australia"

I can only assume the mat you are using is made by a supplier to the dealer??
Does your mat have any backing to reduce scratching damage to the dash?
                          cheers

Can anyone post some pics of how the dash mat moulds around the instrument panel? I'm keen to get one but I would really like it to properly mould around the instrument panel + the centre section as well

Especially when they don't work... They're a bit useless on the 150.
