  • 3L Diesel Auto Trans dipstick - where is it?

Anybody know where the dipstick is for the automatic transmission? I have RTFM and cannot find any reference to it. I have looked under the bonnet too. Still no luck.

    Surely there is one!

I didn't get the under bonnet run-down when I purchased the vehicle. There was an engine in there and it made the vehicle move. That was all that mattered I suppose.

As far as I am aware, there is no dipstick as it is a sealed unit.

        Chuck
        Correct.
This is correct for the newer 5 speede Auto's, the older 4 speed had a dipstick which is easy to find.

        Cheers Andrew

If it's a five speed auto then no dip stick. A sealed unit as previously stated. This applies to 120 and 150 series as 90 series had a four speed unit and that has a dip stick on the drivers side of the engine bay

Hi .There is a filler plug up on the RHS of the housing and there is a level plug in about the middle of the base which you have to extract and fill to just over flowing .I shouldn't tell you but that's how I filled my trans to add extra oil for my cooler then I had it checked at the next service (level) by the dealer and no worries .Cheers Foxy

I was surprised when I went to get my Auto serviced at 120,000 and there was no charge for oil, new Autos have long life oil, even new Falcon no longer has dipstick.

Just be aware that the "lifetime" fluid fill shouldn't be taken literally to be for the life of the vehicle.

Especially for folks towing with rigs close to the legal tow limit for the Prado, it may be worthwhile getting the fluid changed every few years or so.

Toyota have a fairly specific fluid for the gearbox, so "any old" ATF will not do.
