    Andy,

I have the same problem with our 100's and use

    Usual just happy customer disclaimer

As the 9350 stick half way past the roof line - helps with range but not the urban jungle!

Did not like the Kaymar bracket as you need to remove this to change the spare. I got a custom made bracket and have had this on my 120 and now my 150. I am using the Codan NGT and fitted the radio between the seat and fridge (custom storage system).

I like the spring as it prevents damage when you whack a tree/shrub. From the photo you can see the spring is at the same height as the top of the roof racks. The photos of the models on the latest Big w catalogue are way prettier.

I think that is what I need Nifty, can I ask where you got the bracket made and how much?

            An000,

I had it custom made by Gibson Tru Body, Brendale in BRisbane. Could not find the invoice as we purchased a few at the time. Think it worked out to be more than 300 but less then 400 each which was not that much more than the Kaymar bracket. Its made from 6mm * 50mm steel. The bracket bolts in behind the spare wheel and I have had it on my 120 and now the 150. My brother has one on his 120 and we have not been able to break them.

I am using BFG 265/70/17s and the wheel cover was too tight to easily fit. I then fitted the antenna bracket but never tried to fit the tyre covers so cannot comment if they will go on with the antenna fitted. But then again, the cover wont go on with the Kaymar so I gues its a mute point.

My agency fitter mounts the auto tune antenna above the spare and consequently our people keep bending the unit/bracket by driving under carports.

I'm with an000 - that's exactly the type of bracket I'm looking for. If there are any others out there looking maybe we could get Gibson Tru Body to run a batch?

The only thing to keep in mind, mobile HF antenna is already behind the 8 ball in performance and the autotunes need a min of 50% of the body above a metal plane, also a tyre filled with wire coils is far from a friendly neighbour, mobile HF is always going to be a compromise, it comes down to how much can you limit it.

Front mount a 9350 is still better than a rear, but we are all going rear mount (i am).

                    Hi Matthew,
Did you end up installing the Codan 3040?
I looked at it but at $1500 it was very expensive.
                    Regards

We have a few 3040's on the road, i was running one on my Falcon, and will put one on my 150 in the next week or so, on a kaymar bracket, current installations have all had the mounting surface being the highest point of the vehicle. It will be interesting in the lower position how it performs. Certainly different not hearing the tuning, we run some position tracking off ours, so there is some automated transmiting occuring.

                        Matthew,
You are correct in that the mobile antenna is a comprimise due to its short length.

Just back from 4 weeks in Tassie. I subscribe to VKS737 and have my own HF base just west of Brisbane (where it is quiet) and I had no probems accessing the networks. I also carry a NVIS antenna kit and find that works lots better probably for two reasons: it is a lot longer (4m) and it throws the radio waves up in the air and not to the horizon as the vertical whips do.

I can provide an explanation but this is too techo for this forum. Do a google search on NVIS and you can read the articles.

To the point, may antenna is mounted on the rear door and the top of the tuner part is equal in height to the highest part of the vehicle to prevent damage from going under buildings etc... Whilst the optimum is to mount the top two thirds clear of the vehicle the performance is only slightly degraded and you probably wont notice this when driving.

I have posted pictures of my install.

The biggest issue for Prado owners is to get the diesel fuel injector noise out of the receiver. I managed to greatly reduce mine but it is still there.

                        Nifty.

                          Nifty,

Mine is at TJM getting sorted and expect it sometime this week, been delayed with all of Toyota's issues and We have wrecked a few so my got bumped down the list internally.

Keen to hear the works youhave done to sort the noise, mine will be the first of ours with running a HF, i have heard they are noisy and putting The emf magnets on each injector harness is the main fix?

After the usual good earthing of course!

I have a Kaymar antenna bracket and have swung back to putting a 9350 on from my ute and putting the 3040 on the ute.

I have a reply from Gibson Tru Body in Brisbane:

                            ------------------------
To supply; 1 x Aerial bracket to suit 150 Series Prado (rear door mount / powdercoated black): $436.00 + GST
This price is ex our works – Transport costs NOT included.
Discounts for quantity order may apply.
                            ------------------------

I am just waiting for their confirmation of the dimension to make sure my 9350 will not be higher than the highest point of the car (roof rails).

Called Kaymar up and the current rear-door mount definitely will bring the tuner at least 10cm higher than the roofrails. I left a feedback note suggesting they looking at having a lower version, but that will be too late for me!

                              Injector noise reduction success

I fitted a braid across the rear door hinge, bolted it to the body and chassis, then ran the braid to the exhaust pipe where I tied it to the bracket on the exhaust system using a hose clamp. Do the same for the mid point and this significantly dropped the injector noise. Together with the ferrite beads on the injector cabling I now have reduced the noise to a workable level. No more problems with the primary VKS channel (ch 2) but can hear it (just) on the 10meg and 14 meg frequencies.

I am looking at mounting options for the Auto tune antenna at the rear with out the need to go for a full blown dual wheel carrier or replacing the rear bumper. It would be good to retain use of the wheel cover with camera. I have had a look on the Kaymar site but have not seen a picture of one mounted with the cover still on.

Where have others mounted the radio unit? I know that under the drivers seat is pretty popular in other vehicles.

If someone has pics that would be great.
I have a 150 GXL and have installed a barrett 2050 with a 2019 Auto tune Aerial (similar to Codan). I used a Kaymer K7120 mount bracket c/w a K7123 HF Aerial Mount Bracket. This lifts the tye out from the door slightly and fits in behind the tyre. I have added some pics and as you can see the OEM tyre cover still fits. I do not get any injector noise whatsoever with this unit.
