Mate I totally want to do the same thing on my 120 series. My 2006 gxl has no audio controls on the steering wheel. I'm watching the wreckers for a secondhand one and hoping you'll have figured out the wiring by then.
2006 Prado GXL, Manual 6sd v6, ARB Bull Bar, ARB Air Lockers front and back, under bonnet compressor (obviously), Warn 9000Lb winch, Shit Spotties, ARB dual battery's, Bilstien Suspension lift kit all round, under-bonnet diff breathers, Engel and Hella rear plugs. .

The only problem with that link is the minimum order is for 1000. Don't think I can afford 1000 Prado's.

gday Downunder, no mate you just order from them a "sample" single unit, there is no commitment to buy anymore after...have done this with other gear...

Fair enough, I believe I have now everything I now need for the conversion so when I get a chance I will do the changeover.

STEP ONE: DISCONNECT THE BATTERY AND WAIT TWO MINUTES - the most important step, unless you want an airbag going off by accident.

Step two - remove fiddly little plastic covers on each side of wheel - one is around the cruise control stalk, and the other is a blank cover in the same place on the opposite side. This gives access to the two T30 Torx screws holding the airbag in place.

Use T30 Torx bit to unscrew airbag screws. Lift airbag gently away from steering wheel to gain access to airbag and horn connectors. The horn connector is pretty straightforward to remove, but the two airbag plugs have a locking tab which has to be prized up gently with a small flatblade screwdriver.

Once the airbag is removed the blank "ornaments" as Toyota calls them can be unbolted and discarded.

Next the steering wheel gets removed. Remove the locking nut with an appropriate size socket, then use a steering wheel puller to remove the wheel.

Now remove the top and bottom plastic covers enclosing the combination switch.

Finally remove the combination switch itself after swearing profusely at all the snap together wiring connectors holding it in place.

If you have a replacement clockspring ready, you should be able to see how the clockspring snaps onto the body of the combination switch. There are three claws which need to be gently prised away to release the clockspring from the switch.

Then, as the manuals love to say..... REASSEMBLY IS THE REVERSE OF THE ABOVE !

Take your time, don't force anything if you're not sure, and try not to break any plastic clips.

              Enjoy!

Oops - forgot some important stuff..... Make sure before you remove the steering wheel that the front wheels are straight, and the steering wheel is centred. Then mark the wheel and the spline shaft so that you can realign them exactly on reassembly.

Success ! Finally got the steering wheel audio controls working.

I replaced the GX standard spiral cable (clockspring) with the GXL standard part, which has an extra socket on the steering wheel side for the wires coming from the audio controls. See previous posts for part numbers.

The next part of the puzzle was to figure out which wires needed to be connected to the radio. The wiring diagram has the information but it's hard to interpret. The three wires we need are on connector E12 of the spiral cable, and are as follows:

                  pin 4 - blue
                  pin 5 - black
                  pin 6 - white

Now the next question is where do they go in the fixed wiring harness. According to the wiring diagram they go to connector H28 which plugs to the "Radio Receiver Assembly". So I went looking around behind the radio etc for an unused connector fitting the description, (white 20 pin) but failed. More disappointment.....

Today I decided that I did not care where connector H28 is - I just cut off the wires from pins 4,5,6 and connected fresh wires to them and ran them to the rear of my DIG Options aftermarket radio.

                  connections were as follows:

E12 pin 4 - blue to pin 10 black on DIG Options control port (GND)
E12 pin 5 - black to pin 13 red on DIG Options control port (Key Ad1)
E12 pin 6 - white to pin 9 white on DIG Options control port (Key Ad2)

                  The following buttons work now:

                  Volume up
                  Volume down
Up arrow/down arrow - causes radio to scan to next station or USB/Ipod to jump to next track
Mode - causes radio to cycle through radio/USB/ipod etc but I can't g
Off hook - causes radio to switch to bluetooth phone mode ready to dial
On hook - causes radio to hang up call
                  Speech/mute - toggles radio/USB/Ipod mute on/off

                    Hi paddlesteemer,

I got mine working about a month a go, but i have not had the time due to work traveling commitments to do the right up.

I am not sure if you have also added the power to the green backlights in the wheel button display or not. When i did mine i did not cut the wires i just gently removed the insulation and soldered the 5 wires (three steering wheel controls) and two for lights.

For the lights i just connected to the light power of switches. I can tell you the pins on the connectors you need to put power to light up the wheel, but i cannot do this to the weekend due to work travel.

My next project is to see if the AC climate control from the GXL will work in the GX.

                      Hi paddlesteemer,

To get the steering wheel lights to work you need to connect to pin 12 (positive illimination) and pin 10 (Grd) at the downstreem on the clock spring and then run the wore connecting the positive illimination to one of the ilimination lights on the right hand dash switch lights where i just peared off the insulation and soldered it. And the ground wire i connected to one of the ground on i think the same switch, you need to make sure you get them orintated the right way are the lights are diodes and polorised.

I must say - thanks to all who have contributed to this thread. Saves me a LOT of hassles.

There seems to be two different controls

Also, where did you guys source your parts from and what was the total cost?

First one looks like it is the GXL/ VX.

Second one looks like the Kakadu wheel.
