  • Rear Door Chainsaw Mount

    Hi All,

Was cleaning out the shed and was wondering what to do with the old bracket that mounted the spare to the back door and decided to make a chain saw mount out of it.

Hope this uploading picture thing works, not to sure on doing this....

Pic 1 - shows the cut down bracket and the flat bar used, I masked the bracket up around the base, laid it on a flat surface and marked it at 30mm all around, I used a block of wood with a pen taped to it that worked out at 30mm off the flat surface.

Then I cut along the line with a grinder and thin cutting wheel.

The flat bar is 100mm x 5mm and 550mm long

Pic 2 - Shows the cut sections mounted on the door.

Pic 3 - I Lined up the bottom bracket and the steel plate so everything was in the middle and tacked it on

Pic 4 - shows plenty of clearance

Pic 5 - I cut a slot for the bar of the chainsaw to go through by drilling 2 x 1/2inch holes approx. 80mm apart and joining them with the grinder.
Then cut the piece off approx. 75mm

Wish List - nomad transmission lockup, roof mount DVD, long range tank, endless air compressor to fit the 150.

Pic 6 - Weld it on the top

Pic 7 - Test Fit using a chainsaw with an 18inch Bar - bracket will fit a 20inch Chainsaw

Pic 8 - Bought a 22inch Bar Guard from the Stihl Shop for $12.00, cut it down 2 inch, just cos it looked neater and wasn't hanging to low. I drilled 2 x 1/4inch holes right through the guard and drilled 1/2inch holes through one side to allow round head bolts to be used to bolt guard to the plate using 1/4 x 1inch rounded Philips head bolts with nylocks

Pic 9 - All mounted up

Pic 10 - Saw sits neat and tidy

Pic 11 - Bracket is nearly out of sight without the saw

The flat bar got cut down a bit and ended up being 500mm long

I went out for a few hours on the weekend with the saw fitted and gave it a test. The saw sits good a doesn't bounce around to much, but I will need to design a clamp to stop it moving side to side. It cant fall out but it moves around so I will sort it out and update this post.

Nice idea, how are you going to stop the bar oil going everywhere?

What's the covering on your back window? How do you find the 'Big Horns'?

            Hi D4D,

I never cart my saws around for long periods of time with bar oil or fuel in them, I always empty fluids back into the containers. Apart from that degreaser.

Back window and rear side windows have one way vision on them, same as taxi's and buses etc. keeps the locals from stealing my stuff and is also good during summer. It's very easy to put on and is hard wearing.

Big Horns are great, I spend a lot of time offroad with work travelling very rocky terrain and have never had a side wall issue. These Tyres have been on the car for around 80,000km, I rotate them every 10,000 and they sill have around 30% tread left. You can definantly hear them on the road but they are not as noisey as some other brands.

Very impressive, be good to see it once you design and fit the clamp.

I have only ever seen one other chain saw mounted to the back of a vehicle and it was on a platform/ shelf just above the spare wheel so that the saw sat horizontal.

Hey VKPrado, yeah that's right, I got my idea from a picture on the net i saw of a saw mounted on quad bike.

I have not seen a horizontal mount for real but think the view might be pretty obstructed out the back window.

Aren't you concerned about damage to the saw from bouncing it on the junction between blade and saw? It's a neat idea though.

You are about right with that. Chainsaw has turned into a dirty work here . Not happy about it.

top effort it looks good, did you drill a drain hole at the bottom of the plastic blade cover ?
We have that same window tint/cover on our work buses at the Granites Gold Mine, it works well with the 40+ degree days we have here.

                            Cheers Derek

Hi Derek, Yes I drilled a 10mm hole in the bottom.

I am thinking about putting some more on the rear door windows as well, not sure how it will go with the window going up and down, might end up with a door full of it....

I have an idea for the bar clamp and are keen to get it fitted and tested out but work keeps getting in the way this week.

                              Ben
