Do you know what that black device in the middle of the rear floor does? can it be shifted?

I took out my Prado rear seats yesterday (before I read your post) and discovered same (see below).

(Sorry, don't know how to rotate photo. It was OK before I copied it).

        HI All,

If you are pinched for time, I had the local dealer rip the seats out during its service last week for $100.

Anyone know where to source this floor kit? I could make my own but happy to purchase premade if reasonable. Google search didnt reveal anything. Thnx. Frank

Offroad Systems sell a floor kit, it fits well but does not cover the side edges, they will send you a couple of pics showing this. If your building a drawer set off it then the lack of sides is not an issue.

I know this is an old post, but has anyone considered the legal implications of removing the 3rd row of seats ?? Seems to be a real minefield. And the insurance also for such a change??
What have owners done in regards to the legal issues?? Is it legal to un bolt the rear seats?? Do you need a new compliance certifcate that now says your vehicle is a 5 seater, not a 7 seater?? And what did you insurance company say when you told them about the seat removal ? Thanks.

My vehicle is registered in QLD. I have”temporarily “ removed my third row of seats. They are stored for replacement when I decide to dispose the vehicle as it would need to Road Worthy compliant for sale.

Here is Google search AI response to my search today:

In Queensland, removing seats from a light vehicle can be done temporarily without needing approval, provided the vehicle's category doesn't change. However, if seats are permanently removed, it requires approval from an Approved Person (AP) and the fitting of a Modification Plate. If the modification results in a change of vehicle category, this must also be considered. Modifications, including seat removal, that are not approved can lead to insurance issues and potential prosecution.
                Temporary Seat Removal:
                • If seats are bolted in and can be easily reinstalled, temporary removal is permitted without needing approval, as long as the vehicle's category remains the same.
                • For example, removing rear seats for extra luggage space is generally allowed as a temporary measure.
                • It's crucial to ensure the vehicle is still compliant with all relevant safety standards after the seats are removed, such as having the correct number of seatbelts for the remaining seats. “

                  Just like
watsea times two. I'm now driving my second Prado 150. The first was a MY2016 GX 7-seater, I temporarily removed the 3rd row for about 5 years before refitting them and trading the GX in on a 2023 GXL. Within an hour of arriving home, the GXL was also stripped of its 3rd row seats. As before, the seats, cover and brackets were wrapped in 0.4mm builder's plastic an carfully placing in the back of my shed. Around 45kg weight removed - yep, I weighed them!

I had some warranty related trouble with the 2023 GXL - random drivetrain noise. When I returned it to the dealer for rectification, the dealer asked me to remove my storage boxes to rule them out from being the source of the noise, which I did. (The noise was coming from the front diff, which was replaced under warranty.)
