  • Long range fuel tank swap.

    Hi to all.

Some months ago I was looking through all the interesting info on this forum & found an idea that it is possible to swap the auxiliary fuel tank from a 120 series to the 150 series

to give an extra 30 litre capacity. I think this was on diesel models, not sure about the petrol. ??

Does anyone know where to find the link or if this is possible.

I have only had my 2016 Prado for about 6 months & will be building it up for touring & more challenging 4wding, so any ideas greatly appreciated.

So the spare tyre is currently mounted underneath your 2016 Prado 150? Otherwise, your question is not making sense to me.

      Hi GeeWhizz.

My spare tyre is rear door mounted & I have the 50 - 60 ? litre second tank under the rear.

I had heard that to swap the aux. tank from the earlier 120 series was possible because the mounting positions were the same & it would give you an extra 30 litre capacity.

I think I will have to keep on searching or get some dimensions/photos from a 120.

I am interested in the same concept. Let us know what you find.

The Prado 150 comes with (by coincidence) 150 litres fuel capacity. This gives me a range of around 1500km or around 900 km when towing a 2.5 tonne caravan. I have yet to find two fuel stations further apart than that. If there are rare occasions when I would need additional fuel, I think that this need would be best handled with a jerry can or two.

With my 150 litres capacity I never carry more than 100 litres while driving around the city - I would waste fuel carrying the extra weight around. I only fill to capacity when heading away on a trip and only then if the local price is cheap. 150 litres of fuel capacity gives you more flexibility to fill or partly fill the tank according to your expected needs.

            Hi RPP & GeeWhizz.

My previous 4wd, a 2001 Jackaroo T.D. had a total capacity of 145 litres & we covered many challenging trips including the Hay River in the northern Simpson Desert.

When looking to upgrade I was considering a 120 series Prado for many reasons, one being its fuel capacity of 180 litres.

The 150 litre capacity of the 150 series should be ample to complete most trips we plan for the future & would only be towing a lighter camper trailer where appropriate.

Perhaps I am being greedy in looking for the extra capacity ??? but as I said I thought I saw a post somewhere in this forum where you could swap the rear tanks ???

I will do some measurements on a friends 120 when I get the chance & let you know. Members of my Toyota 4wd club might have some ideas ???

Thanks for your responses. I will keep you updated when I can.

            Regards, Russell ................

The Prado 150 with 150ltr tankage goes a long way. But not the length of the Anne Beadel Hwy, and is insufficient for a CSR trip.
Heading down the CSR mid June, and back along the Anne Beadel next year. I'll need 1-2 Jerries.

There is fuel available at about the halfway point on both the Canning and Anne Beadell and these are about the most remote tracks in the country. As an example if you bank on about 15 l/100km in the CSR or Simpson you will have 1000km and 2 jerries will get you through. Anywhere else in the country 500-600 km between fuel is likely. IE the extra tank is not really needed unless you want extra weight to carry around and want a project. You would have to check that the 120 and 150 tanks feed the main tank the same way. I am not sure that they do. 2 jerries are cheap.

This might sound naive, but where / how is the best spot / way to carry two extra jerries of diesel ?
is it ok to carry them in the back of the prado (with the camping gear), and fill the tank as soon as it gets low, so the jerries are emptied as soon as possible ? I don't have roof racks, and don't tow a trailer, but am keen to do the Canning next year.

I did the CSR 10 years ago in my previous 120 petrol, I had 6 jerries of fuel, 3 of water and a 40 l Engel all ratchet strapped to the floor where the middle seats had been removed. This means the weight is low and inside the wheelbase. Emptied one every day. I use the same system with my 2016 diesel but now never carry more than 2 jerries but certainly didn't need them on the Anne Beadell. Don't carry fuel on the roof- too top heavy and unstable on the rough dunes of CSR. I only fill jerries at the last fuel before the remote stuff. It costs more but means you aren't carrying fuel and weight on the higher speed outback roads.A bigger tank may make sense in 200 series doing a lot of remote stuff but is not really needed in most 150s.
