  • Rear Door Fold Out Table

Here are some pics of the rear fold down table I made and fitted to a GLX 150.

I got a lot of ideas for this from the 120 Mods section.

I used MDF for the table and covered it with marine carpet using contact adhesive. I used plastic cabin hinges to mount the table to the door. I used bungee cord loops attached to the table and bungee cord knobs attached to the door to hold the table up (closed) when not in use. I added some bungee cord to the underside to hold tea and hand towels. Initially I used cotton webbing strap to hold the table at the correct height, but this frayed in a short period of time, so I went with nylon webbing and it's been fine. Since these photos, I have used a Selcor bungee cable joiner to join the bungee rather than the big ugly knot. I've also added a shelf I made to sit the fridge on and store recovery gear. I'll post picks of that when I get the 150 back from Toyota service..see this thread for more info... http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=11596

I have used the table to prepare and cook meals (it's just a tad too high to eat from when sitting), to butcher game meat in the field and to change the baby's nappy. It's a great addition and easy to make.

Overall I estimate this mod cost me about $80. I already had the MDF; the carpet was $40, and the fittings, adhesive etc around $40. I used stainless steel screws all round.

Yes, you have to drill 6 holes in your rear door, but it's well worth it if you have kids or get out and about in your 150. And when it comes time to sell your 150, this mod is so cheap you can afford to leave it in place, so there's no holes to worry about.

Re: Rear Door Fold Out Table

Off topic - I know. ops:

But I notice the rear door opening mechanism on your 150 is different from the 120 series version. Is this a gas strut type set-up and, if so, is there any locking mechanism to keep the door either halfway or fully opened?

BTW - well done with the mod. I must get myself one of these one days!

The strut can be locked in the full open position to prevent the door from closing. I think it's some type of gas strut. If sufficient force is applied to the door, the lock mechanism is over-ridden and the door will close.

Did you put your hinges into just the plastic door trim or did you find metal behind?

Well done. I'd love to do one of these. They seem to be very practical! Just can't bring myself to drill holes in my back door yet

for those doing this, i would recommend mounting the board a little lower, and placing a third hinge in the middle so you don't get any sag in the middle. or you can use very thick board, but if you plan on running drawers, you will find that you can't close your door.

              a very neat job!

Re: Rear Door Fold Out Table

If you mount it lower, wouldn't you hit the 3rd row seats? Or is the 3rd row far enough forward for the board thickness?

Re: Rear Door Fold Out Table

from memory.. and it is from memory ( i got rid of my seats pretty quickly) .. it was ok with the seats as they sit into the storage area a bit to give you a little bit of room for things behind them between them and the door.

I was referring to the raised floor where the 3rd row seats fold into. Did you remove that raised bit as well?
From the photos here, it looks like you did. viewtopic.php?f=38&t=8221&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&start=20# p123238
That plastic raised bit which you removed also looks like it is very close to the door seal.

yeah that bits goes as well when you install drawers..

but it might get in the way if you leave it in as you have mentioned... see - i told you it's been a while..

Checked mine today as I'm thinking of doing the same thing.

Only a tiny gap between back door trim and the trim around where the seats fold into. Couldn't even fit my key remote in the gap). So, the table would have to be up above this to fit with the door closed.

                        Cheers, Sam.

They're great for cutting through padlocks on:

                            - Closed tracks
                            - Camper trailers
                            - Locked public toilets
                            - Etc

Never know when you might find something that'd look better in your shed than the rightful owners...
