  • My post #181 in this thread has car picture with the wheels and tyres combo visible (12-11-2014).

    http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...l=1#post489126

Wanted 17 inch to get better choice of tyres. Choice in 18 size is limited and it could also be harder to get a replacement tyre quickly if needed. For 4wd which does go off road 17 is my choice. FJ wheels were available at a good price and also there is concern from a number of forum members that GXL wheels would not work on VX due to offset - so it seemed a safer choice :-)

Saying that I am still to see proof that FJ wheels have different offset than GXL wheels (technical docs etc. would help) - but I like look of FJs and was going to get 17's anyway. Safer to try combinations where one can sight that a solution has worked - pictures help :-)

Re Pirelli Scorpion ATR tyres (I have LT 265/70R17 size) they have softer rubber therefore handling is good but they will wear out faster. Tyre with hard rubber will give long mileage while tyre with softer rubber will handle better/be safer (assuming same tread design on both).

What size rims did you get and where did you source them from?

      • I have a set of 265/65/18 Bfg all terrains on my vx 150. I do have a lift on it these days but the tyres do fit without rubbing with standard suspension. Hope
        This helps.

        • Has anyone gone with steel wheels? Looking at the 17" CSA Sunraysia's with a zero offset, I see a few times people having success with the FJ Cruiser wheels with I think it was the +15 offset.

Any ideas how I would sit with that?

It will depend on how wide the tyres you intend to put on. The turning arc is now bigger with 0 offset rims. So too wide a tyre may rub on the mudflaps. Also be mindful of the tyre protruding outside the wheel arches and legalities of increasing the wheel track by more than 26mm.

            • Thanks amts, I am not trying to run anything crazy. I have heard a few stories of people using the FJ cruiser 17" rim which is a +12 Offset I believe.

I'm assuming the Sunraysia wheels are available in other offsets. Certainly don't want to go asking for trouble with protruding tires etc.

Basically trying to find the most cost effective solution of going down to a 17" wheel, plus the sunraysias look good

              • I'm running 18" aftermarket wheels with +15 offset and a 8.5" wide rim. Tyres are a 265/65/18 BFG a/t. Wheels & tyres sit perfectly flush with the outside edge of the guards. Inside edge of wheels/tyres is actually 2.5mm closer to the upper control arms due to 1" wider wheels. So if you are wanting to run a wider tyre than 265 you will be getting very close to the upper control arms unless the rim you use is the same width as the factory 7.5" ones. Just some food for thought!

                • I am looking at a set of 2015 FJ Cruiser rims which are 17 x 7.5 with a +15 offset. Will this work with a 2009 Kakadu GRJ150R with BFG KO2 265/70/R17s and a 2" lift? The seller of the rims says they will give more internal clearance from top mount but sit out an extra 10mm.

                  • The seller is right, FJ wheels fit great on Prados. I have seen a couple of sets on KDSS ones so should be fine.

The only thing holding me back is I like my black rims currently, works well with the silver pearl paint on the Kaka. The only drawback with those is the repairs and repainting when they get scuffed and scratched is quite expensive. I've looked at a couple of tyre places websites but have not seen any other rims that grab me yet.

They will fit fine Fido, I have them on my Kakadu and as yet have not lifted it yet. they are a tight squeeze into the spare wheel cover tho. If you went bigger you'd have to use the FJ spare wheel face plate over the whole tyre cover.[IMG][/IMG]

Thanks for the pic Orrsom. What size tyres are you running?

They are the standard issue Dunlop AT22 that come on the FJ. they are 265/70/17's. The bloke I bought them off had bought the car and driven to the wheel shop for an upgrade, I figured that as they were like new I may as well wear them down before replacing them. I will eventually go to the Cooper AT3 I think. but that's a while off yet.

                            • On my Kakadu I'm running 275/65/18 Maxxis MT764's about a 32.5 inch tyre. On the standard rims with no lift. All good. All though it's being lifted as they look to big stock height.
