  • General Grabber AT 2s

Just had a set of General Grabber AT2s Fitted 265/65R17s fitted Would have preferred 265/70s but the wife likes the wheel cover. And Brains no decision on white lettering in or out as they have none in this size. At $285 fitted and balance plus free rotation and balance @ 10k a lot of savings compared to BFG and Coopers also a fraction of balance weight compared to the originals. Tread pattern is the same as BFG .

Had these tyres 2 years ago in a 265/70/r17 on gxl 120 rims on my 2003 gx 120. Where happy with them got 50,000kms and a bit.
Had them rotated regularly and 36 to 38psi in them for road use. Did the High country a couple of times also snow and mud, for an A/T like BFG they went quite well.

I have 3 General Grabber AT2's on camper trailer (incl spare) and I am considering putting a set on Prado but I thought they would have done better than 50,000km's and a bit.

50k is very light - i'm almost at 70k on the dunlops! and i reckon they will almost stretch to 80k.

i would expect to get more than 100k on bf's.

Some one on another forum has these boots fitted. On a recent trip they blew 3 with side wall blowouts. One caused by a stick and the others by stones.
I spoke to a friend of mine who is a boot dealer and he said they are great for snow but the sidewall is a bit soft and prone to damage.
This put me of these boots.

I put a set on about 20 months ago. At 76,000kms they were still going strong. I was hoping I would have got to at least 100,000 but I staked one beyond repair (at xmas on a remote fishing trip). So I put a new full new set back on. I would recommend them totally, good grip on the road and had no issues with off road stuff. I don’t go hard 4wding but do plenty of fishing, camping and hunting so they got a fair bit of off road. I’m a rep so do plenty of city & highway miles also.

Just bought a set in 245/70/17 for 230 a corner. First impressions are the tread is very similar to the BFGs so happy with that. They also sit very square compared to the grantrek slicks that came with the car so hence look taller. The sidewall does seem a bit on the soft side but then again i have nothing else to compare them too but we shall see how they perform. At the end of the day they were exactly what i was looking for...AT tyre for the GX rims that didn't cost a fortune aaaand had white sidewall writing...well hell why not! Eventually when we build our house and have storage ill be putting the grandtreks back on and getting a set of american racing wheels with some real muddies as a weekend set.

Not used them in anger yet but will report back when i do. Hopefully they will be great for the odd trip up to the high country etc.

Just in case anyone is interested I have had them on for a few weeks now and have some initial thoughts. Firstly the positives, they perform very well for an AT tyre on the blacktop. They excel on gravel roads and I've yet to find their limit off road but my off road excursions have been somewhat limited. The gravel road performance has been the biggest benefit for me as the old street tyres were skittish. Downsides are increase in noise but it's certainly not intrusive. Fuel economy is also down by 0.1 l per 100 but that's a small price as far as I'm concerned. The only 4x4 driving I've done has been on loose rocky climbs with the occasional sandy track.

I have these on my vehicle, as previously mentioned the side walls are a bit soft. I punctured the side wall near the shoulder with a very small stick. When I plugged it just to keep as a spare to get home it just kept tearing.

A good tyre traction wise on most surfaces just soft sidewalls. Will not be buying them again, good value but too high risk for me with remote outback touring.

I have been using these on my 90 in 265/75/16. The first set reached 55k kms of mostly tar when I moved them onto the camper with 7-8mm tread left, and fitted a brand new set to the truck. The new set has now done almost 30k km (mostly towing) on all surfaces (about 50/50 tar vs sand/gravel/corrugations/etc), and they should do about the same again. The only complaint that I have with them, and its quite annoying, is that one of them as developed a high spot that can't quite be balanced out, so I have to run that tyre on the rear only. I also found that one of them runs a bit rough in one direction, but feels perfectly smooth if I run it in the opposite direction. Overall though, I have been very impressed with them.

just back from a holiday trip to the high country and thought i would report back on my AT2s if anybody is interested. Did Bright, round the back of Mt Buffalo - Blue Rag - Dargo - Grant area including the crooked river track (so much fun!). Ran the tyres at 28 psi the full way as wanted a compromise between grip and high speed gravel road stability (and my compressor packed up grrr).

Verdict...tyres are certainly up to the job...didn't loose traction once but i guess rating the tyres on that alone is silly as there are too many variables. Tracks were dry though with loose rocky STEEP climbs and descents. No signs of chipping or damage etc. Slick and steep water crossing exits didn't slow the prado down either. Im pretty happy with them .
