  • Coopers ST MAXX 265/70/R17

Just wanted to put it out there for comments about the new ST Maxxx's
I just bought a new set of ST Maxx with tyers and a new set steel rims for the 150.
Now alot of people have been worried about the noise levels and the quality of the tyers so i thought i would kick this open for debate.
As a test of the noise levels i tooka sound reading in the car at 100km/h along a straight road for 14kms and the readings were between 71 - 73 db.
With the new rubber on i did the same test and found the levels at first glace to be the same. Once i downloaded the data and did a complete comparision i found that with the new ST's the overall difference was 0.3db higher.
Now the only variable i couldnt control was the wind noise. As it turns out the winds on the second run were higher so that will add to the levels as well.
Overall from just sitting in the car and listening to them, They do ahve a hum at 100kmbut only if you have the radio off.
All in all im happy as pig in you know what.
    Time to get them dirty

Would be intersted to do another db test when they have worn down say 1/2 way just for curiosity. Good idea but, might do that with my grandtrecks on then with the muddies and see what level they are, can borrow the meter from work...............Cheers Steve

I have a set of the ST MAXX and done 11000K's so far. Am very happy with the choice so far. Don't really notice the road noise anyway

Could you tell me what size wheel and off set you went for? And how they fit in the guard.
I'm thinking of running 17 x 8 ET20. Interested in what you went for?

        Cheers

good question im not to sure i asked the guy for a set of sunrasia rims that will go on the 150 GXL prado. A mate at work said they would be a +25 offset but dont quote me on that.

As for fitting no issues at all i have had them at full lock and no rubbing yet.
However i will be getting a OME 2 inch lift soon as well so i will definatly have no issues then.

          Soprry i couldnt help more

They have a big meeting apparently at Eastern Creek here in Sydney this weekend about the new laws regarding lifts (forget the code there using regarding it), wheels modifications etc, will be interesting to see what the outcome is. Im not sure wether this will have anything to do with QLD, if they pass certain things then maybe might be good for every state as they might all agree instead of having different bloody laws for different states but lets hope its not to restrcited in what they do...........Cheers Steve

                    I agree.

I am in Victoria & we adopted the new code in November last year.

It is a great source of relief to legally run 50mm bigger diameter tyres.

WOW disco4, 50mm that would be great. Im not sure on the current rules but there was talk of 50mm max here in NSW so it would either be 25mm bigger tyre,25mm lift or just say 50 mmm lift and cant go any bigger with tyres ?? Here we are restricted to 15mm bigger then standard rolling diameter, I have 65 profile on my prado (standard) if i went to say 70 profile in the way of BFG muddy then my rolling diameter goes to 28mm over standard so 13mm more then currently allowed, pain in the arse, I cant get a good quality muddy in LT in a 65 profile and Im worried insurance could be an issue if some thing was to go belly up, Imagine if I hit and killed some one then they say "" he was running 13mm more then allowed by RTA"" then Im screwed get my arse sued...Not willing to take the risk so hope fully some common sense will come from it all, BUT I've got my doubts with all the doo-gooders around....Cheers Steve

According to the following link Queensland Government are adopting the national Code of practice.
                        http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/Safety/Veh...fications.aspx

Section 4.11 of the National Code of Practice in short states that an overall lift including tyres and suspension can't be more than 50mm.

                        http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roa..._2011%20v3.pdf

Given my vehicle has approximate 40mm or so lift I may only be able to increase diameter of tyres by 10mm meaning the 265/70/17 tyres would become illegal. Bugger!!!

A tyre that is 275/65/17 is 12.7mm larger than the original on the 150 GXL that being 265/65/17 which would meet the current QLD regulations and (within 2.7mm) meet the national code of practice for my vehicle.

The ST MAXX doesn't come in a 275/65/17 size.

Hi all that is right you can go up to 50mm over your standard rolling diameter of the tyre. I ask three tyre shops in coff's harbour two weeks ago (Jacks,Goodyear,Bob Jane) all from there regulation book.

                          Cheers Keith

Mate I get different answers where ever I go. I have been watchng this closely as I have 5 rims ready to fit new tyres upto (running two set of rims, factory alloys with grandtrecks for general use and steels with what ever I fit up for off road) The problem im finding is getting a LT mud tyre in factory size so that leaves the only option that is to go to 70 profile or go AT which i dont want to do. Im also getting a OME 50ml lift fitted so if NSW doesnt adopt the new rule (which I have no idea what stage its upto) I have no other option then to keep the 65 profile to stay legal. We all know that 50mm is jack shit but at the end of the day its when and if some thing goes wrong (especially if some one gets hurt badly or killed) then this is where its possible to get your arse sued because technically the tyres are to big and for sure as shit some one will want to hang us 4wd owners out to dry to prove a point. These days Im not willing to run the risk and if need be will just have to settle for the most aggresive AT I can find if I cant fit bigger tyres legally and your talking insurance as well...........Cheers Steve Sorry should have added I have been to Bob Janes, CC tyres and another one here in Penrith and only that I asked them would I be legal with the mud tyres I was enquiring about that they said "um no" only allowed 15mm over standard. One Bob Jane owner I have know for years I rang him up and he said "na your legal" he then said he would double check and got back to me saying no you wont be legal. He was a bit concerned as he has sold a shit load of different tyres (obviously) to owners and never queried it. he thought there was an exception for 4wd's but if you read the fine print doesnt matter where its a 4wd or a toyota yaris same rule appies
