    fido666,

I bought them from the US, the local importer doesn't bring that size in,

    http://www.treaddepot.com/tire/51748.html

There's another thread that gives a bit more info

    http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...naPro-ATM-RF10

I wasn't suggesting you get the same tyres more that some 265/65-18's do fit under the cover, essentially the 265/70-17's people fit to GXL's and GX's are the same size as the 265/65-18's, some people get the cover on some don't.

1010 tires has a great tyre size calculator that lets you compare various sizes.

I wasn't intending to swap tyres, the ones on the 150 look pretty much brand new. I was more interested in whether they had the same outer dimension as a guide to the rear cover being able to fit.

Sure, I hadn't read the whole thread,

maybe the best bet is to give it a try and see how you go, we know the size fits just not sure about the brand

Just a side question but does having the slightly larger than stock tyres throw the speedo out much and which way?

Yes it does, with that size yours will be almost probably spot on, they normally read under, it could be a little over as well, best get a GPS and check it.

I have a Navman MY85XLT GPS I can use to test it, don't think the inbuilt NAV has a speed display. Reminder to self, must RTFM!

Is it legal in Vic to go from 265/60/18 to 265/65/18 tyres? IIRC the difference in outer diameter is ~25mm, not sure if this is within the allowed increase. I bought the vehicle with these tyres already fitted but I have no paperwork that shows this, just a printout of the dealer's web listing for the vehicle. If there is an issue I need to know so I can go back to the dealer.

ETA: I found an answer of sorts here :-

                http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/NR/rd...340/0/VSI8.pdf

The thing is it states that :-
"The overall diameter of any replacement rim and tyre must not be more than 15mm greater than largest diameter tyre specified by the vehicle manufacturer for that model or vehicle series"

I'm assuming the stock tyres aren't necessarily the largest ones specified but will check the owner's manual for specs. I'm hoping I'm OK the BFG's on my Kakadu look pretty new and I'd hate to have to replace them so early.

Last week I put an enquiry through to the NSW RTA (now RMS) regarding tyre sizes and Vehicle Standards Bulletin (i.e. VSB 14, section LS)... in particular the reference to fitting up to a 50 mm increase in Overall Diameter, and what would be involved to get it approved.

I was told that the VSB was only a guide, and was refered to the relevant NSW Vehicle Standards Information (i.e. VSI 9 Rev 4, and no more than 15mm etc...).

I was really after some LT tyres, and something a bit chunkier... but right now, I just couldn't afford to change rims down from the 18's etc... (and definately can't afford for there to be ambiguity around insurance).

Anyway, I went with the 265/60R18 Cooper A/T3s (Pax construction). On the road, they seem to handle quite similar to the OE's, possibly with a bit more feedback. Noise? Can't really tell... there is more noise from the wind hitting the snorkel and roof racks. Doing an advanced 4x4 course this month, so will know more then about off-road handling (as I used the Grand-treks for the last course).

I find working out what rules apply very confusing... even with the speed rating... my reading is is you go below your placarded speed rating (no lower that 140Km/h), you need a sticker in your window. However, even the the VX is rated H, the dealer said you can legally fit T's anywhere in Australia legally... must be some other law or guideline somewhere... T'would be nice if it was all in one place ;-/

Fiddo, The Vic Roads link you have is quite old - check out the revised version below, in particular section 13.3.1. Depending upon your suspension setup you may be fine.

Thanks Slevey, I pulled the other link out of another thread I found on here. In reading section 13.3.1 I'm unsure as to whether you have to have the suspension lifted to fit the larger tyres, pretty sure mine is bog standard.

Telltale sign is different coloured shocks or springs.

Shocks and springs are plain black, I assume they are Toyota factory ones. I phoned the tyre joint where I got my 95's Bridgestones from, they told me as long as the vehicle category on the compliance plate is MC it's OK (it is). I think I will just give VicRoads a call to confirm, hope they don't give me any bad news.

ETA: The news from VicRoads is not good. I am told you can only go up to 50mm larger if you have a suspension lift done (the previous owner said he didn't). The limit without a lift is 15mm. The 265/65/18s are ~26mm larger. Now I'm not sure where that leaves me because I bought it from a dealer assuming the tyres had complied with roadworthy requirements. They say they can swap them with another Prado's tyres but the only other used Kakadu they have has Dunlop Grandtrek AT20s, I feel I would be getting short changed if I accepted those.

Just go and get yourself a lift and you will be legal.

Great excuse, I might try that one myself

                            Cheers,

It would be nice but seriously can't justify it after we've just forked out so much for the changeover.

Something's not right. Whoever wrote the rules for Vic is on something. How can you have 75mm of total ride height increase for Option 1 (50mm suspension + 50mm diameter larger tyres) yet Option 2 only allows 15mm diameter larger tyres with no suspension lift. It doesn't make sense.
