  • 18" Tyres H/T, A/T, & M/T's what have you got?

After sifting through multiple threads on the available tyre choices to suit a 18" wheel I thought it would be good to get some opinions and pictures all On one thread so here's mine,

    TYRE: Cooper Zeon LTZ 285x60x18"

ON ROAD: great wet or dry slightly noisy best at 36psi

OFF ROAD: So far great in sand at 18-20 psi and most 4x4 situations are great

WEAR: So far about 3mm in 10,000ks

    COST: $468 per tyre

PRO'S: good on and off road tyre so far

CONS: would like them a tad quieter as the Kakadu is very quite, just touches upper controll arms in hard off road conditions JUST, Price.
OVERALL: 8/10 would buy them again or maybe try AT3's

Today I had a set of 275x65x18" Cooper AT3's put on the car. So far very happy, they look great, are very smooth and quite. The Zeons developed some cracks so coopers did a pro-rata warranty with some AT3's and a little money. From what I have read they seem to perform well off road as well, I guess I will find out soon enough.

I bought my Kakadu with BFG 265/65/R18 AT's on it. I only got to try them off-road on gravel and dirt and they were fine. On-road they were pretty quiet but a little "squirmy" on tram tracks which I drive over every work day, probably due to the large blocks in the centre of the tread. They were around 18 months old and weren't showing any visible signs of wear.

After multiple enquiries with VicRoads I was advised the BFG's were oversize so contacted my dealer who made their own enquiries. They agreed to swap over the tyres for me and agreed I should be given new AT tyres, not Grandcraps. BFG's don't make the AT in a 265/60/R18 size so I asked for Bridgestone Dueler D697LT's. So far they have been very good on-road and quiet but I've yet to try them on-road.

Do you get any rubbing issues with the AT3's Kakadaz?

And compliance wise? Not sure about WA but here in Vic more than 15mm increase in size is not allowed without a lift; that's why I lost my BFG's. I could have kept them and never had an issue but come an insurance claim and who knows?

I think your allowed 50mm combined lift in WA so my tyres are 40mm overall diameter larger than stock (20mm raised vehicle height) and the lift has settled at about 30mm so should be give of take very close. I don't think I've owned a car that would tick every compliance box in the last 20 years.

I've been running the AT3 s for around 10k kms in 265 65 18 on a +18 offset and it just rubs on the lower inside. the tyres are great just going for something for aggressive.

Im looking at getting some 17x8 steelies with 285 70 17 mt's for our bigger trips. I've already bolted up some with a 0 offset and they clear the front brakes however they hang out the guards a fair bit.

Can anyone tell me if i go with a +10 will they still fit???

Might just have to get one and see how it goes.
this is a pic of the at3s

I am having the same dramas finding a tyre that is a good all terrain to suit the 18" kakadu rims.
It looks like the only decent tyre around in an all terrain is the Cooper AT/3 or BF All Terrain.
I am toying around with an idea of using a 2012 Hilux SR5 rim and have just picked up a set today off good old trusty ebay for $890.

They are near new and came off a car with 73klm on clock and am happy with the efforts. they are a 17" rim and I like how they sort of resemble the Kakadu rims. I will look at putting a set of copper STT or BFG mud terrain. tyre size will prob be 265 70 17. that should keep it all within limits and if I get a damaged tyre on a trip at least it maybe a bit easier to find a tyre at a dealer quicker too. If it all works out ill post some pics of the end results. if not looks like I got another set of rims for my hilux.

I Paid $890 for a set of 4 & they have done 73klm so guess like new . The rims are in immaculate condition & the guy I bought them off fitted the Hilux TRD rims and hense the boxes so bit of a bonus in keeping them protected until i fit the tyres.

Mate you might have a drama going back to a 17 on the kakadu. The hilux rims are a +30 offset. I fitted 17s with a 0 and they just cleard the front brakes. You might want to bolt them up before you get tyres and check the clearance

Stewydz thanks for the heads up mate!!
Just finished trial fitting and checking & I have some news...

                        THEY FIT

I have a feeling that the new 2012 hilux SR5 has the prado brakes and the locking hubs look the same. I have herd people fitting the prado brakes to hilux's & I recon they would have insane stopping power!!
I have some photos of what they look like & clearances. I have about 10-12 mm from caliper to rim and the arm that comes down from the UCA to the hub assembly looks the same. I myself think they suit it very well, and I am one that believe's that if you change a rim on any car a factory rim looks the part sometimes more than a bling rim and thats why I thought to try the SR5 rim.
                        Heres the pics:

I now just have to find some good tyres I am more sided to the cooper stt then the bfg muddies now just have to find a good deal on them. MTZ look the goods too.

Sorry for getting off topic a bit fellas for 18" tyres for the Prado Kakadu but after being so pissed off trying to find tyres that are either all terrain or muddies (no muddies avalible that i can see) there is not much hope & why I went down this path & I now have the choice in any tread type and it will be easier to obtain a tyre in a hurry. I can bet that if you needed one in a hurry a tyre shop would have a 17" off road tyre in stock than a 18".

I also forgot to mention that the rims do seem to fit and all looks ok with no rubbing or knocking from lock to lock but it may be different story when tyres are fitted but I think at this stage it should be ok as long as I stick to 265. I might have to find a tyre dealer who has got time to try different options. Ill try organise this week if i get time and post more pics..

Those wheels look pretty good MNK! Will be intresting to see what they look like with tyres fitted! With an offset of +30 that should give you a wider track shouldn't it?

Make sure you check the clearance of the SR5 rims to the KDSS components. Bobthemonkey went with 17" FJ rims with +15 offset to get sufficient clearance at full lock. A +30 offset rim actually reduces the track of a 150 which is not legal.
