  • Noob Q: GX Wheels and Tyres

    Hi all,
I have been doing some reading on here about the different sizes of wheels/tyres (I'm coming from a nissan patrol background - it was a bit easier to keep up with) for the prados in between years and models.
My question is: will a set of 17" 120 Prado GX steel wheels fit on a gx 150 Prado to replace the alloys and gain in width so that I can put some 'normal' sized tyres on?
I am looking at these rims here: http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/sunsh...els/1054811464 which say they are 8" wide but I am now starting to think that the seller thinks that they are 8", but in fact they are 6"?

Did the GXL ever come with steel wheels? Could that be what this dude is selling and are they 8"?

Can anyone please enlighten me as I am completely new to this prado thing, and after buying one on the weekend and telling them to put new shoes on it, I am now not sure what size I can get, and I don't want to fluff around with the stock size that is on it!

    Thank you very much.

    Reading done:

    http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...9-150-GX-tyres
http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread...X-with-no-Mods - this one seems like it is on the money, but I am not sure if the final poster bought similar to what I am looking at, or alloys.

Sorry, one last question here: what size are people going for on a wider 17" rim for these prados? I know that they come out with a 265/65/17, are they the largest without scrubbing on stock suspension?
    Are people going for a 265/70/17? or a 275/65/17?

    (sizes compared here: http://www.1010tires.com/Tools/Tire-...0R17/265-75R16)

    so confused!

Isiman those wheels will be illegal on a 150. The offset is 5mm more which means track will be reduced by 10mm and that is not legal. Those wheels were on the GX limited before the 2006 upgrade and from there on the GX, they are 17 x 7.5" and the same size as the GXL and other variants alloy wheels.

If you do get wheels make sure the offset is 25 or less. You can increase track by 25mm more than the widest track offered on the vehicle (for ESC equipped 4wds). Not sure what the track of the 150 GX was but you can comfortably go to a 15mm offset. I would think going less than that you will probably see tyres poking out past the guards.

On tyres lots of guys here run 265/70 which is not legal under the current Qld regulations for vehicles with ESC but I cannot recall anyone getting any grief about that from either insurance companies or Mr Plod. I run 275/65 which is legal and gains about 7mm in ground clearance.

      Does that help?

Thanks for the info mjrandom, not what I was wanting to hear though!
Problem being that we bought the GX, and as part of the deal I get to choose a full set of tyres - I was really wanting to go up a bit in size but obviously the GX wheels suck bum.
I think I might get them to supply but not fit a set of 275/65/17s and then later down the track find a set of wheels to suit

Steelies are pretty reasonable as are aftermarket alloys. Worth talking with tyre shops and see what is on offer.

Thats probably the best idea. I have a GX and am running the original alloys with some good all terrains. As soon as they wear out the original street tyres are going back on and im getting some steels with something aggressive for the weekend.
2013 (12 build) GX Auto.......with safari snorkel, toyota bar, tow bar, roof racks, led spots with fancy newpro switchgear, uniden remote UHF and aerial, ARB bash plates, Roadsafe recovery points, digoptions radio, general grabber AT2s, cheap ebay roof rack that has stood up surprisingly well.....
