  • Best tyre pressures for new ATR's

I've just bought some new Pirelli ATR's for the 150. So far so good, but they look quite flat, even at 36psi unload. The recommended tyre pressure is 200kpa or about 29 psi on the door panel ?. this seems very low to me given the profile of the tyre already.

heading up to Shark Bay in September as well, towing a 1.2 tonne jayco pop up caravan, so any advice on the pressures above, for towing and when towing through sand, would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks

    JC

The tyre pressure should be enough to prevent the tyre getting excessively hot when towing. Pressure rise = temperature rise; its a direct relationship.

When a tyre is not inflated enough it deforms which generates heat, which causes the pressure to increase and increases the chance of tyre failure as well as general wear. I've checked this using one of those cheap laser temp gauges to check the tyre temp when towing, it can get pretty hot on long runs.

If you tow with 40psi you will get a pretty big pressure increase, anything up to about 15psi, it's best to check this for yourself as it depends on load and speed. I aim for a pressure rise of about 10% which means for towing I run 50-52psi in the back and 45psi in the front. Around town and without load it really doesn't matter too much but anything under 35psi is pretty low and will stuff up the handling.

I run Pirelli scorpions on my road use rims. 275s. I stick to the 4 psi rule i.e. Set pressure cold, go for a drive, check when hot and adjust so it's 4 psi increase.
I rotate regularly. Works well for me and means I run 40 psi in them usually.

Virtually no heat or pressure increase
This will happen if you tow at too low a pressure
max pressure increase I have recorded is 3psi at 42psi in rear wheels and Ive towed close to 60 000k's so feel qualified to post on the subject

Depends on what you tow, but 3psi increase from cold on the highway is a great result even without towing. I do a big trip up north every year with a bunch of mates and we've all had the same results, mind you it gets pretty hot as well.
