  • Trouble balancing new tyres.

Hi guys. I recently had a set of Coopers St Maxx fitted to my 150. Since then I have returned to the shop twice as between 80-90 kmh an excessive vibration develops via the steering wheel. The first time my wife was told that they rebalanced them. The second time I took the vehicle in the dealer told me that they had to rebalance them again as the weights had come off, this was not the case as I checked that the weights were there before I went there. He then told me that this a common problem with the Prado factory alloys and that if I purchased a set of steel rims that he would do me a " Good Deal On " my problem will be solved. At this point I will call Coopers tomorrow and speak to them as I don't believe the rims are the issue as my previous set of tyres did not have this problem. Has anyone heard of any balancing issues with the factory alloys. Thanks.

I know Geoffury has those tyres fitted on his 150 with no problems at all.

Thanks for the reply, I doubt its the wheels. Hopefully I can sort this out with a call to Coopers.

I highly doubt its the rims, and in fact if you went steel wheels you would in all likelihood make it worse. I am aware of a few people having balancing issues with steel wheels, cant recall it ever being a concern with the genuine alloys.

More than likely the tyre's mate.......Considering you never had the problem before.
Have they tried moving the tyre around the rim? in a different orientation? sometimes this is the answer.
I have had this issue with BFG's also we had to move them on the rim and fixed the problem.
          Can I still play now I have a 200 series?........Had a 2008 120 Series D4D Manual 6 Speed...STANDARD White, Soverign Bar..........Rear Cage........Dashmat.......GX Wheels with Good Year Dura Tracs........Bilstein/Dobbo 2'' lift.....Safari Snorkel....Canvas Seat Covers.....20%tint..........55W HID Headlights.....Mudmats front and rear.....

Yes I believe its the tyres. At this point they have not offered to even road test the vehicle. Thanks guys.

              I'd ring cooper tires directly.

I know when they fitted my ST MAX's the tech marked the tyres as he did them
as good for front or back, in my case he said all tyres balanced well and
good for the front, I said don't they all balance ok? He also showed me two
leaning up against a wall waiting to go back to coopers as he said they
were to far out to balance properly and he wouldn't fit them to a car,
                  happens occassionaly apparently.

I have had no issues with mine and have found them to be very good tyres.

I've had a similar issue with vibration at ~90kmh after the 20k dealer service, running Cooper AT3s. Ended up having them rebalanced / aligned at the Cooper retailer down the road who was surprised how far out they were but also said they'd seen several like that from tge Toyota dealer.

My camper came with Chinese made Coopers. How do you know where your Coopers were made. Maybe they're not as good as the American made ones.

Purchased from a cooper dealer so I will assume they are not grey imports.

Problem solved. The rep from coopers was straight on to it and organized to have the wheels balanced elsewhere. He met my wife there and supervised what was going on. After my wife test drove the car to 95kmh the issue was fixed. Would I buy coopers again ? Definitely. Would I go back to the dealer who is 2 minutes from my home? Definitely not. I think 3 attempts at balancing the tyres and then trying to sell me after market rims to FIX the issue puts paid to that.

Good news. They cost a little more than other brands, but generally their service and warranty is second to none.
