According to Bridgestone, the difference between 275/65/17 and 265/65/17 is 14mm larger in the D697's. My speedo reading of 100k's is 98 on the GPS

Fuel consumption on my 120 was at least 2-3 LPH more with the larger tyres.

Adding to the legal aspect may be how your insurer or (if you have one) lease company treats the size change. I think as long as something is legal, most will accept a change, but it couldnt hurt to ask.

A colleague of mine was told by his lease company that a tyre size change was not permitted under his lease - possibly as it was not just maintenance??

I agree. Running it by the insurance company is definitely worthwhile although, on paper, if it's legal you should be covered (famous last words). Fortunately I don't have it on a lease so no probs there.

For some reason I had thought that my tires are 265/65/18. Today, I went to Jax and asked the guy for a quote and he said are you sure - normally they are 265/60/18.
So,he and I went to out and checked - definitely 265/60
            Quotes:
            BFG KO2 265/60/18:$450 x 5
            BFG KO2 265/65/18:$440 x 5
            Fitted/Balanced/Aligned.

Considering 265/70 is biggest you can put - I am assuming 265/65 wouldn't have any issues with original suspension.

I think all the previous comments in this thread re 265/70 and 265/75 referred to 17" sizes. I amended my earlier thread about maximum legal tyres sizes and diameter increases to include "R17". 265/65 R18 is only a small increase over 265/60 R18 but I haven't searched the forum to see if they work without issues.

interesting post. so im getting a set of (second hand) 275/70 17s on FJ wheels. On reading the SA website it seems this is illegal as they are more than 15mm (42mm) bigger than my standard GX tyres..

this seems a woefully small amount and 15mm is not relative to tyre sizes...i mean if i have something like a unimog or iveco 4x4 (i wish) the wear alone would make my tyre illegal from new vs part worn... or even different tread patterns!

Anyway had a look at the placarded 'official sizes' and it seems in some markets the prado came with a 285/60r18. When i compare this to the FJ wheels and tyres im getting (the 275's) the difference is only 17mm. now add in the fact that they are part worn then maybe im within 15mm although i imagine it will be based on the number on the size of the tyre rather than an actual measurement.

has anyone heard of anyone being done for 3mm or so? it seems that this rule is aimed at folks putting on far larger tyres than standard perhaps? interested to hear peoples thoughts...

It is based on what is printed on the sidewall.

Which markets run 285/60R18? 265/60R18 is standard size here in Oz for the VX/Kakadu which is the same diameter as 265/65R17. So for now, in SA, you will need to get your 275/70R17 engineered to be legal.

You'll need to find an automotive engineer.

"The total ground clearance is not increased by more than 50mm."
requires clarification or rewording because the rear axle on the Prado does not change height with a suspension lift.
