  • 18 inch tyres

Hey guys just found out that all terrain tyres light truck tyres for VX prados are very limited and expensive.
I've got a couple of questions. I was talking to the local tyre guys and they said that if I were to go down the aftermarket wheel direction I could only go up in size ( I was thinking of going down to a 17 inch wheel that way I would have much more variety in tyre choices and prices would dramatically drop) he was saying in Queensland that's the law, I've read about people on this forum who have used speedy wheels in 17 inch figuration on their VX or Kakadu is the law different in different states or are these vehicles not insureable anymore?
2ndly if I was to stay with the 18 rims (dam 7.5 inch) what size tyres can you run with out clearance issues eg mudflap. Was looking at 275/65/18 but saw photos and not much play in the wheelwel than there is the 265/65/18 same width but a touch higher with a higher load rating to match and bfg do a lt version, this size doesn't seem to be that common though.
I have a bullbar lights duel bat so fronted sags a little and mostly do the weekend off-roading to glasshouse double island etc any help would be great.

17" at +15 offset will fit. Can't think of any legal issues with going down to 17".

Is it not the rolling diameter of the tyre that is critical? 265/65x17 on all of the lower spec cars are the same diam as the standard 18" tyre on the VX and Grande.

Thanks guys there is a lot of conflicting information out there talked to a bloke at jax wheels and tyres and he said I must stay with 18 inch wheels as that is the size determined on the tyre placard but you can go up a size to 19 inch but not back to 17 inch, there are also issues with thewheel going over the brake caliper.
Think I might have to call my insurance company and ask them. Not to keen to put 17"s on and then find out I'm not covered. Thanks for your help guys more research is needed from my part.

You will need 17" +15 offset to clear the KDSS components, not the brake calipers.

What does it say on the tyre placard?

There is no mention of wheel diameter decrease in this link (including the 2 documents referenced)

Tyre Packard Reads 18 inch wheels. Thanks for the link I agree nothing is mentioned about going to a smaller rim size, on a side note I read the restrictions on bullbars, all those Utes you see with the old 5 post bullbar or the B and S Utes seem to be unroadworthy another grey area I guess.

I'm in the process of doing this for the Kaka, a set of FJ Cruiser rims has already been purchased. Just deciding on tyre size, I think 265/70/17 will be the go. Just have to ensure the OD increase isn't outside the regs, a very confusing subject.

I was reading few months ago that all states and territories were going to mirror each other in regard to vehicle modifications, don't know if or when that would eventuate. Talking to mates down south tyre size increases and suspension lifts are different from state to state it's all very confusing indeed.

If you search tmr/Qld website for Maximum tyre size, you will find that for 4x4 you can increase the diameter by a maximum of 50mm and decrease maximum 26mm. On my 2014 VX I had Cooper S/T Max 275/65R18 installed yesterday. Has increase the diameter by 37mm. Sweet.

Thanks for your reply Kelby just a quick question do you have a lift as mine sits fairly low about 750mm on the front (bullbar lights etc) was looking for this size but worried about loss of power and fuel economy but then again we only live once. Got a price for those Hancock rf10 at 362 a tyre with a lot construction and higher load rating, leaning towards the same direction as you. Priced coopers as well 525 each ouch

To quote the wife, I have the full penis extension (Lift kit, steel bullbar, winch, dual battery, platform Rhino rack, etc). Fuel economy suffers and will drop further with the new tread. And I paid $2470.00 for 5. Full wheel alignment and balanced. Speedo will be out about 4%. I agree there will be a slight power transfer reduction so maybe the power chip will be next. Heading west in a couple of weeks and see how it all goes.

Hey Kelby just a quick question do have any rubbing issues with tyres when the cars tyres are on full lock?
You also said you might entertain the thought of fitting a chip, I myself am in the same position the prados are by means a power house from factory and adding bigger tyres does not help but there is a company I've been looking at lately they do ecu retune/ re flash they are getting good results for minimal outlay ( I have no personal interest in this company but on the sunny coast and abroad they have a very good reputation) visit their Facebook page just autos and see results.

                              Digys,
I have had no problems so far other than the restriction of being unable to add an extra bash plate at the under front. Have done moderate off road and beach and all is fine.
