  • Do I Want Bigger Tyres

As the title suggests - Do I?
My research is showing that 265/70R17s are $30-50 more per tyre than the 265/65R17s.
I want to do all 5 tyres regardless, so there is no saving by not replacing one of my existing tyres and using it as a spare.

Is the extra clearance worth it? Are there other genuine benefits to increasing the tyre size?
Are 265/70s any less common to pick up than 265/65s?

Not when I was shopping around, price the same for both sizes. Then again I was only shopping for BFGs, other brands might be different.

I had less trouble getting 265/70/17 than I did getting 265/65/17, was told by Bob Jane there were only 4 left of the latter in the whole of Melbourne when I needed 5. In the end I went the 265/70/17 in the BFG KO2 from Jax, ordered on Friday and in on Monday.

Every bit of clearance helps so I'm happy with my choice.

Add to the equation your fuel usage will go up on bigger tyres.
More weight. More resistance. More fuel used to push.
Takeoff will be slower as your whole driveline characteristics changes with bigger tyres.
You'll find both sizes are readily available.

        Yes. Next Question.

Just depends on what you want I guess. 265/70's are a little fatter and taller - personally I think they look better.
The 265/65's have a very narrow sidewall and look crap next to a 265/70.
Apart from that, I havent seen a noticeable increase in fuel usage or speed reduction since putting the larger ones on.
We dont drive sports cars anyway....

I was quoted $325 a corner for the bfgs in 265/65 and $355 a corner for the 265/70 from Bob Jane Shepparton.

My fuel economy is already out the window haha. Does the bigger tyre put "too much" stress on the driveline?

It adds more stress. But to a point of being worried? I wouldn't think so. Many prados have been running them forever. And no broken bits unless going quite extreme.

I have BFG 265/65R17 on now, & they have served me well with no problems at all.( it was new & I knew no better at the time)
83k on them, but they look like skate board wheels now with lift & worn down.
Moving to the 265/70R17 next (very soon) they suit better & will work better for what I want & they will serve you better.

The FJ comes in 265/70/17 (31.8"), plenty of guys run 35"s on the standard running gear (rear end basically the same as P150) without issues. Economy suffers alot though.

Personally i run stock (FJ) tyres on the road and fit 33.0" muddies for offroad. An inch and a bit makes a massive difference, and adds 1-1.5 L/100 km Petrol

Any extra clearance helps. I noticed about a 1-1.5 L/100km increase too but much better traction, slightly more clearance, looks better and smoother ride. My STZ's were about $20/tyre more exy over the 65 profile. Worth it. Do it, you'll only regret it later for that extra bit of clearance.

Wish list in order I'll get them: Sliders, 2" lift, E-locker, Winch bar with winch.

Well, I think I'm sold. Might just have to get a bit of extra cash put into the lease to cover the cost...

Just tell them Jax will do the same tyre for $335, they should come down. Jax initially wanted $369 from me but when I quoted them the cheaper price I had been quoted from Bob Jane they came down. Kmart were even cheaper but only $5 per tyre and they were not as convenient to get to.

Didn't realise kmart sold the bfgs....they are more convenient than Bob Jane. I have a feeling that the Bridgestone here sell them too...

A local independant tyre shop just quoted me $350 a corner for the 70s. Bob Jane's website say they will beat it by 10%...Making them $315

Unfortunately, they only offered to bring it down to 340. Might see if the independent can beat that... Otherwise, I'll be looking to book it in.
