  • BFG AT 265/70/R17 or 265/65/R17?

Hi guys, in the final stages of negotiation on a new GXL V6 Auto. I will be changing the tyres immediately and am wondering what your thoughts are on 65 series vs going to 70 series tyres? Will there be a noticeable decrease in grunt with the larger tyres due to the change in gearing? I know with my NS pajero (manual) it did make a noticeable difference (not huge but noticeable).

Obviously the advantage is more clearance with the 70 series tyres.

This vehicle will be used off road.

    Cheers, Sam.

I am in the process of shopping around for the 265/70/17 tyres in LT construction.

If I were you, I would fit the same size, as the 265/65/17 are not available in LT construction which is much more preferable for anyone doing off road driving IMO.
The 65 series turns 12 more revolutions per 1km, so there is bugger all difference in them really, as far as I am concerned.

I run the 265/70's and they are great. I have heard/read that there may be issues in an accident with insurance because they are larger than allowed??, but i'm not planning on crashing into anyone soon.

I have 265/65/17 in LT construction, so maybe BFG have discontinued that option ?
I'll be going to 70 profile next however ( the dogbone spacers are ordered to space the tyre out from the rear door )
In a 120, the 70 size makes the speedo spot on. Not sure in a 150.

I run the BFG LT 65 series and this has kept my speedo spot on so I suppose it is just a bit different for everyone.

            Hi there
I have 70's but only because I couldn't get 65's in the tyre I have. 65's are legal and 70's are illegal. You are allowed 15mm increase in overall wheel diameter (legally) but the 70's make the tyre 26.5mm larger than standard (776mm for 65's compared to 802mm for 70's). Insurance wise your car suppose to be legal, but supposedly only an issue if the modifcation was a contributing factor to the accident. I'm not a laywer so I can't back you up in court with that but this is what I have found out. Ground clearance isn't really an issue here as with a deflated tyre you would be lucky to pick up 7 or 8mm. Not really moving up to a 33" or anything. My advice, if you can stay legal in the tyre you want, get them.
            Hope this helps

Don't know. My tyre guy spoke to the BFG rep while I was there, and that is what I was told.
265/70/17's are also very hard to come by at the moment. I have a set on the way from FNQ, to be fitted on Saturday. They are costing me $356.00 a tyre.
I hate to think what the next boat load of tyres will cost retail with the dollar plunging of late. :?

All BFG's AT's are now LT construct.

There are actually 3 size choices from BFG 265/65/17 LT, 265/70/17 LT and 275/65/17 LT

The last one is within the 15mm change allowed in QLD (not sure about VIC)

I have the 265/70r17 on my 120 at the moment. I need a new set and noone in Sydney can get them. Apparently a boatload are coming in with a month.

I have written the first 120 off with these tyres. The insurance company knew the size and type of the tyres on it. They replaced the whole car including the so called 'illegal' tyres. Let the insurance company know of what you have and if they are willing to insure you then i don't think it is a problem, so long as your tyres are not stupidly large i guess.

Yes that is the case here in Vic as well, I'm told 2-4 weeks unless you can find someone who stocks them. I found a bloke in ferntree gully with 9 (now 5) for $345 a tyre, just depends how bad you want them!

I was looking into this this week - supply seems an issue - Widetread in Lilydale had them in stock - big pricing difference between 265/70/17 ($360 odd) and 26/65/17 ($310) - cant remember eact prices but was about $50 a tyre difference.
