  • Certification or insurance problems

I have just spoken to a large national insurance company and they have no issues with modifications as long as they are legal. They were very clear that tyres that were outside legal spec would void any insurance claim. I was told that if I wanted tyres larger in diameter than the state authority allows then I must have an engineers certificate to make them legal. In Victoria VicRoads allows you to have a diameter increase of 15mm only. This means any tyre larger than 265/60 R17 will void insurance if fitted without an engineers certificate. Has anyone obtained a certificate and can you give us a clue as to the effort and cost involved?

You can go 275/65/17 and still be legal.

I missed the 265/60 R18 on the Kakadu, these are 25 larger in diameter than GXL tyres. This brings 265/65 R17 & 275/65 R17 within legal size in Victoria.

265/65R17 is the normal size on the 120 and 150 with the exception of the Kakadu so of couse it is legal. In regards to the diamter being 25mm larger on the Kakadu then I think that is incorrect. 265/60 R18 on the Kak are 774mm which is 30.51" while the GXL at 265/65 R17 are 776mm or is 30.56". GXL tyres are larger diamter by a bees nut.

          Re: Certification or insurance problems

I recently enquired about an engineer's certificate for putting on 265/70R17 tyres and it will cost $350.

My insurance company tells me that if the claim involves the tyres and it was the contributing factor to the accident, then the insurance will be denied. Anything else, it is OK.

Mine has an engineers certificate, $350. All legal now. Just find an engineer to do it for you and then there is no issues.

              Certification or insurance problems

Official reply from VicRoads re the maximum allowable increase in diameter.

"The maximum allowable tyre diameter for an off-road type 4WD is 50 mm greater than the diameter of the largest wheel/tyre combination listed on the vehicle's tyre placard. You should note that should you fit these larger diameter tyres it will probably be necessary to correct your speedo to mainatain its accuracy within the Australian Design Rule limits."

Obviously this is VIC only info.

Sorry for digging up an old thread, but I just sent an email to an engineer regarding 265/70/17's. His reply was basically "since the vehicle is fitted with ESP then no modifications can be made, not even changing to same size yet different pattern tyres as that *may* affect the ESP", sounds a lot like VSB14, which AFAIK was not even approved in NSW, yet...

Has anyone got engineering approval in NSW (or WA as I will be moving back there some time next year) for 265/70/17's and a 2" lift on a 150 GXL?

Not allowed different tread pattern! I think that guy is holding on too tight. I goes to show the lack of education/ information about these new laws, not to mention the different interpretations. I've listed all my mods with my insurer, highlighting the tyre sizes and lift, and they have agreed to cover my vehicle. At this point that's all I'm concerned with.

                  Cheers,
                  Dusty

So does that mean when tyre manufacture stops producing said tyre we have to throw our cars away too? What a joke.

Dusty, check the fine print on your policy; if it's not in writing you may still have an issue.

I spoke to my insurer when I first got my Kakadu as it had 265/65/R18 tyres on it (1 size above the placard size). They said they didn't care as long as VicRoads were OK with it, VicRoads said no as the tyres OD was more than 15mm over the placard rated tyre (they were 26mm larger). I could not get any different answer despite trying several different avenues. I am now back to 265/60/R18 which the dealer ended up paying for, it was after all them who sold it to me that way.

BTW, most of this has already been covered in the more recent tyre size threads.
