  • Upgrading Radio/CD player to better unit

Been considering tossing out the outdated OEM Radio/CD/cassette player that is in the 2001 TX and replacing with something better.

Don't want to spend more than $200. 2nd hand is OK.

GPS would be nice, but prob not possible in that price range. Ditto for rear camera.

So,basically, Bluetooth, integration with smartphone for use through speakers, auto mute radio on answer and USB; but CD not necessary. SD card nice but not required.

    Any suggestions?

Have had a look at the later model OEMs like this:
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/251426589...84.m1438.l2648

    Or this:
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/380813871...84.m1438.l2649

But not sure if they can be fitted to a 90 series without facia mods, which I'd like to avoid.

    Would greatly appreciate any thoughts/suggestions/warnings.

    Many thanks.

That's right. The later model units fascia are 10mm wider and the corners are radiused.

ill measure one today but theres atleast 10mm wider each side ...the 90 dash facia is pretty easy to modify .... heat and cut a little bit

Hey, thanks folks. Looks like some of the newer units I've looked at for sale on web pages have a rounded front panel that might look a bit odd in the 90series fascia so probably need to stick to the flat ones.

I gather that the wiring loom/harness and connectors might also be different in the newer model Prados? But that's can't be too difficult to mod if you're just connecting speakers, power and antenna? And it wouldn't be any real loss if the radio didn't work anyway!

Anyone know anything about these units? Can't seem to see a model number anywhere.

Hey I dont know much about the 90 series but would you be able to put a single din unit with a din mount pocket under or above the unit. There are some really nice media player units out there at the moment and are really cheap. I got one similar to this http://www.pioneer.com.au/au/product...50BT/page.html on special for $150. Really nice sound quality too.

The rounded corners is the bit that makes the newer units wider than the older units. So you won't be able to fit it into the console without modifications.
The wiring loom is the same for most models. The much newer units have a large connector with smaller pins which gives reverse camera input and steering wheel controls.

wiring connectors are dofferent... easy to fix...
single din are the std fitment to the base model 90.... mine had a factory single din with a factory CD single under it....
all toyotas from eary 80s to early 2000s have the same din pocket if fitted . i have a single din TV screen witha din pocket below and CB fitted in the din pocket

if you search ebay you can pick up NEW double din Pioneer 7" screens with all the fruit for 400$ ....but you still cant beat factory decks for simplicity

If you upgrade make sure the volume knob is big enough to grab onto without interfering with any of the other buttons on the fascia. I put an Eclipse unit in with a tiny volume knob and every time my wife turns the volume up and down her fingers hit the search button and off it goes - I leave her at home now. Its also a bugger when your bouncing around off road.

I installed this to my 2002 TX, works a treat. I got the the extra usb and hands free one. Check it out, easy to install, and keep the OEM look. It just plugs in the back of the OEM unit. I'm very happy with mine. http://www.cushieaudio.com.au/vehicl...rer_toyota=574

wiring was the same as my 96 GXL plugged straight in and worked
the fascia needed a bit of trimming and heating and manipulation and then painted in bumper black... this paints awesome for black dash parts
also drilled new holes in the radio brackets to make it move forward 5mm
dosnt look out of place at all
picked it up off ebay for $170 del to my door!

Mate, that looks awesome--precisely what I've been looking for. Any idea what the model number is so I can hunt one down? Your fascia panel looks identical to my 2001TX too.
