I would just like to know if there is any way to mount a 12" subwoofer directly into the car instead of putting it in the box.

Good question....I had amps under both front seats, but one day being hung up in a deep water hole quickly made me move them as water poured in and soaked my amps. I made a box and fitted three amps inside it and removed the 3rd row seats. Now the box with the amps fits snug behind the 2nd row seats and my 12" sub sits on top. I figure your best option would be to make a dummy floor in the rear of our Prado, and mount your Sub in that.Originally posted by delza_6170[b]Because the world's not flat[/b] -

Technically you can, it just won't sound as good.
My understanding of subs is there needs to be an enclosed space behind (ported or unported) them in order to produce the best bass. The volume of the space (i.e. size of the box) is usually calculated as well to produce the best results.
I've seen and heard people that have installed them into more of a panel system as opposed to a box and they sounded rubbish.

thanks for the feedback...."Yowie in Oz" i've i'll just mount the amp under the seat and place the sub in a box just in the boot, and if i need to use 3rd ow seats just take the sub out and put it back in when the seats are put back up.

you could just get a free air sub... still not quite as good as boxed one, but can be quite good

Hi there,
If the bass is to boomy for your liking, and doesn't give you that hard quick beat, put an old pillow on the box; around the rear walls away from the woofer.
Also be careful with your woofer; box requirements vary greatly between woofers and some have more allowable tolerances than others.
Be mindful of distorion when up loud; you'll burn out the voicecoil and strip it from the former it's wound around ;-)
and if possible set the rest of your system on a high pass setting, let the bass go where it belongs

You can buy powered sub woofers that come in a low profile heavy cast alloy cases used mainly for
vehicles where space is a problem. They can be mounted under the seats or on the
sides of the vehicle etc. They sound very good for their size, down side is they are expensive.
