Can anyone tell me if there is supposed to be any vertical play in the front diff mounts (the bit that has the rubber at the top and bottom of the mounts)?

I just had my front diff mounts replaced as the rubber bushes on both had worn away which allowed vertical movement up and down resulting in a loud knocking noise when going over bumps.
Earlier my mechanic and I had spent an hour looking for the cause of the knock before I headed off on the Canning Stock Route to no avail, but a wheel alignment after the trip revealed the cause of the knock, it also revealed that all the steering rack bushes were worn resulting in movement in the whole rack making any attempt to carry out an alignment worthless.
Once the steering rack bushes were replaced, it was back to the alignment only to find that the camber nuts, bolts and washers etc were so badly rusted they couldn't be adjusted and needed to be replaced.
So I arrive home after paying the $1800 bill only to find that the I now have power steering fluid leaking from both boots on the steering rack, which apparently means the whole rack will need replacing. I am yet to inform SWMBO of the latest development.

The diff mount bushes aren't very expensive so I'll just go ahead and replace them.
I've had my rack reconditioned (about 50'000km ago) and since day 1 thought that the recon should have made a bigger difference. Now I'm starting to think about the rack again after my missus drove it and said never again... I'm not sure if I should try another recon, or what the alternatives are?95 3.0 Camp Car, 150 V6 Daily Driver[SIZE=4]

I was told that they could only source the complete bracket which was around $350 each from memory, but I'm sure I could have obtained the bushes through Amayama but didn't have the time as I was heading off to Brisbane for a few days and had to leave things in my wife's hands.Originally posted by fridayman View PostThe diff mount bushes aren't very expensive so I'll just go ahead and replace them.

I probably need to take one off and have a better look at it. Looking at the online parts diagrams it looks like there is the metal bracket and then a rubber spacer on top of and underneath the part where the vertical bolt goes through. Its not clear if the metal bracket has a fixed rubber bush in it.Originally posted by Rainman View PostI was told that they could only source the complete bracket which was around $350 each from memory, but I'm sure I could have obtained the bushes through Amayama but didn't have the time as I was heading off to Brisbane for a few days and had to leave things in my wife's hands.
$350 each!? Ouch Looking on Amayama, the 4 rubber stoppers will be about $20 for the set, and the brackets are about $100 for the pair (plus postage).95 3.0 Camp Car, 150 V6 Daily Driver[SIZE=4]

The stoppers are easily replaced, but as mentioned the arms also have a bushing which cannot be replaced independently of the arms.glen_ep - engineered, 4" lift, 33" 255/85R16, lockers, 4.88 ratios www.pradopoint.com.au/showthread.php?17237 www.youtube.com/user/glenep www.fb.com/groups/ToyotaPrado90
