Recovery Hooks on 90 Series

Ok, I know the 90 Series comes with a large H/D hook on the front driver's underside and as per the owner's manual this is a towing hook only.

I am looking at the Bushranger Recovery Hook with Keeper (or similar) and mounting 2-4 of these to the rig. Has anyone fitted these previously? If so, can you enlighten me on where to mount them, front and rear?

Otherwise, can anyone suggest similar, off-the-shelf alternatives and mounting locations.

Hi ya!
Yep got these on my car. easy to fit, bolt straight on no holes to drill. The keepers are a bit useless once you do your first recovery, they dont spring back.
Mine hooks are still in tack after a few snatchings (some with boat trailer!!) and I probably recomend to always use a bridle.

Are these the standard ones you're talking about?


I have put another recovery hook on the other side... can't remember the brand but it went on easily enough. I did use different bolts than the ones supplied. I'll have to think on why... can't for the life of me remember :?

Any chance you can either post or send me a couple of images to show where u bolted them on :?: Stuck my head under the car briefly today and couldn't really see where to put them without breaking out the drill.

Snaga, yeah that is the towing hook. It's mentioned in the owners manual and the wording suggests that it not be used for snatching. The hooks like the Bushranger ones sell for ~$30 - $40 in local shops so I firure a relatively inexpensive option for a bridal snatch set-up.

Hello again, Sorry up at work for the week got no photos to send thru. Will take some if you havent sorted it out.
The front ones should bolt on to the chassis with exsiting holes there (same as the pic above).Also I gave them a bit of a spray of paint on the bolts once they where tightened they get surface rust pretty quick.

If anyone wants a second factory hook to bolt on the front, let me know. I just fitted a pair of rated ones, but to be honest the factory one looks good enough for occasional users IMHO.

Free to a good home if you're passing through (Bairnsdale, Vic) or just postage costs.

May look better but it's not exactly functional for anything other then a tie down hook. It's either in the manual or stamped on the hook itself, I can't remember, that the hook is for tie down ONLY. I ended up picking up a couple of the "rated" hooks from my local ARB store and got them to fit them while I was there (meant a walk to tackleworld while I waited ). I say "rated" because we all know that the hooks are rated to xx,xxxlbs but the fitment is not rated (i.e. bolts, location etc ... don't wanna start this conversation again as I know its covered in depth in another thread). I didn't even ask for the original tie down hook back as it would have sat in a cupboard in my garage for the next 5 years before I finally fed it to the bin.

There are tie-down points - metal loops, and one TOWING hook, about which we're talking. It's there for towing, the others are there for tiedowns. The difference is snatching - whilst I wouldn't snatch using one of these, I think 2 connected with a Y (eg trunk protector) would be up to a mild snatch. Beyond that, 2 RATED hooks obviously - hence my mod.

It's an argument that will go on forever - and I know the factory hooks are only for towing - but there's some pretty jerky (one could say "snatchy" :wink: ) tow-ers out there. Presumably Toyota think the hooks can take a bit of that abuse or they wouldn't risk putting the hook there at all.

Aaaanyway, enough of that. If anyone wants a second TOWING hook, for TOWING, the offer stands.

I've snatched many times from the standard tow hooks. No signs of any damage at all, they'd hold up to a hell of a lot of abuse considering when they are rated (whether it be for towing or snatching) they are in fact tested to 10 times what they are stamped at.
Will be swapping the standard ones for rated at sometime though.

You will probably find that the thread on the ones supplied was different to that required. I bought some aftermarket ones, and haven't fitted them yet because the thread is different. I have also found that with my TJM bar mouting bracket, the hook doesn't sit low enough. The factory hook has a thicker base so it sits lower and clears my bar mounting bracket. I'm guessing it's not a good idea to put spacers in :roll:

It was either the thread or the length...
I think we needed an extra 5 or 10mm because the nudge bar uses the same mounting holes.
