  • transaxle codes A02B

    Dear prado lovers,
I need help about the transaxle code of my VZJ95. I would like to know if someone can tell me the if the code A02B is a open or a LSD dif.
This code is on the Vin plate below the vin nr. Could any one tell me this.
I searched the internet but could not find 1 answer, some pages say it is an open dif, some say it is LSD.

    Thank you, Bor

I have tried to decipher the axle code before and didn't get far.

    http://www.toysport.com/technical%20...ifications.htm

Seems like the axle code for Prados uses a different key.

The easiest way to know if you have an LSD, is to jack one of the rear wheels off the ground and see if you can feel any resistance from the LSD.

Can I ask why you want to know if you have an LSD?

All VZJ95 Prados have a LSD in the rear, unless you have diff locks (either factory (not available in OZ) or aftermarket). As it uses the same diff centre as the hilux, it is only the hilux that can come with an open centre.

I don't believe that is correct croozza. This European spec 2000 model VZJ95 has parts listings for both open and LS diffs.

I have the same Diff code AO2B on my vin plate and I have a LSD ...... although that might be open to discussion the "limited" part that is!

I have just checked redbook (not always correct but pretty close) any way they list limos for all 90 series prados even the rv 4cylinder, and including any with traction control which I agree with as I had both 90's one without traction one with and both had limo's. If you are concerned in regards to which diff oil to use, just use a limo oil in both and there wont be any issues what so ever, BUT dont use a normal diff oil in an LSD diff it will stuff the clutches up (mind you probably not working anyway been a toyota limo there crap) Cheers Steve

I think they have just copied it over from the Hilux and just put the VZJ95 in the heading, because the Prado did not come with an open rear diff, however some in other countries did come with rear drum brakes BUT still had the LSD. That could be the confusion with them as the hilux has rear drums with the open centre rear diff.

I already tried the decoder, I could also do not get an answer.
I phoned a Toyota dealer and they can not tell me. The say could be an open or ar LSD dif, according to the Vin nr.
I always tought it was without LSD, so when I changed oil, I put in the wrong one in. So when it is an LSD it does not work anymore....
I tried the trick with jacking up the wheels, but I do not veel anything.
The idea is to put a Lokka Lokker in the dif and they must know what carrier is in the dif. There is a diverance between te open and LSD dif.

Are you 100% sure? That would be the answer I was looking for...

4.100 diff no LSD possibly Difflock (check) A01B
4.300 Diff no LSD possibly Difflock A02B
                    4.300 Diff with LSD A02A
                    4.100 Diff with LSD A01A

Note that A02B and A01B is used for both locking and no locking diffs with the 4.300/4.100 ratio but you can easily check the diff to see if there is a rusty lump grafted on there

Hi there Bounder, we here in Aus were never lucky enough to be able to get factory lockers either front or back. I thought limo's were standard across the range of prados ?? Another way is to jack the vehicle up from the arse end (so both rear wheels are off the ground) and then turn one wheel forward on one side, if its limo both will turn the same direction, if one turns one way the other turns the opposite then its an open diff.....Cheers Steve

Sorry but MY Trans Axle Code is A02B, it is a LSD - by tag, by rotating the rear wheels and actually inspecting the diff center and it is a 4.3 Ratio.
This is for an Australian spec and delivered Prado.

I understand that Toyota in its wisdom has used the same code in different vehicles to mean different ratios, diff type etc, so you cannot use a generic table to interpret axle codes. That is a A02B in a Prado is different to a A02B in a Soarer to a A02B in a Supra and so on.
You need to use a model specific table, now wether Mr Toyota has gone one step further and used different code tables for different countries/regions I don't know.

Steve, I tried jacking up the car. But when I turn one wheel the other spins in the opposite direction. Is that because it does not have LSD, or because I used the wrong oil....... ??
And an LSD also will spin in that direction, there are also planetary diff wheels in the diff (do not know how to say it otherwise? )
Must the gearbox be in N ? when you try this?

Leethal is right, I already found that toyota using the same code for different diff's.....

Mate I would have to ask that question to the diff bloke I was talking to the other day. I suppose its possible that if the limo is stuffed and there is no resistance then maybe it will do the same as if you had an open diff. Leave it with me I will find out, unless some one else on here like the Roo may know more about it ??? Cheers Steve
