I'd just like to share what I learnt recently whilst replacing the clutch on our '98 3.0TD (1KZ-TE engine). The same may also apply to the 120 series vehicles (as well as other vehicles such as the Hilux) which use the same engine.
Basically there are two different clutch kits for this engine - one for engines with a 4mm step in the flywheel (the common one) and one for engines with a 0.5mm step in the flywheel. The latter costs twice as much as the former (and was the one required by our vehicle). As far as I can tell, the only difference between the two kits (besides for the price) is that one has a 3.5mm thicker pressure plate.
Below are some pictures of the two clutch kits:

It would seem that Toyota engineered a small difference into some vehicles in order to force those owners to buy the clutch kit which costs twice as much.
A possible workaround for owners with the 0.5mm recess in their flywheels (and not wanting to pay double the price for their clutch kit) is to simply engineer the recess 3.5mm deeper, or find a "used" flywheel somewhere which has the 4mm recess in it already.
Has anybody else run into this?
P.S. I made a small webpage with the long version of this story, up here. (Please note: It does have a somewhat scathing tone towards Toyota, as I am obviously not happy with them about this.)
P.S.2. I hope that I have not offended anyone or broken any forum rules by posting about this as a newbie . Thanks for the great forum.
