There's some info in the 120 thread about the causes. Not sure if its the same for the 90 series?

I've got the opposite problem with my manual. Most times when shifting down from 2nd to 1st I have to really put some weight behind it to get it to move, then other times it slips in real easy.

Is it side to side movement????

or is it forward and back movement????

If it is side to side you need to get 4 selector bushes from toyota i could look up the part number as i just bought some myself for my 90 series. If it is back to front then it is the either the bush on the side of the trans or play in the shifter cable. I have a little bit of forward and back play and it is play in the cable.

When replacing the selector bushes for side to side movement it is relatively easy i did mine at home and took around the 20 mins. But i have replaced heaps of them (mechanic by trade)

Replace your manual shifter bush on the bottom of your shifter.

I've ordered the bushes, but how does one remove the gear stick to replace the bushes?

Haven't done a shifter in a while but there is two possibilties.

firstly have to remove shifter knob (unscrews from memory)
then lift the console up which has the shifter boot around it.

Here is where there is two possibilities.

a - there are 3 10 mm head bolts simply undo and lift shifter out. Seating bush will be sitting in the shifter housing and may be a wave washer under it so just watch it.

                              or

b - it is held on with a big metal retainer in which you push down evenly and then turn anti-clockwise approx 30ish degrees. When the retainer is removed you will see how it is held on and when removed simply lift up. There will also be a spring under the retainer so makes it a little bit of a pain to get in. Again seating bush will be in the shifter housing.

To remove shifter bush on bottom of shifter I normally put shifter in vice and use a pair of pliers to push it off. Can be tight but being warn shouldn't be. To install new one, put the bush on a flat surface and simply push the shifter down into it. You should here it "click" in.

Any problem yell out happy to help!
