Hi all,
I'm new to this forum as this is the first problem I've had witrh my car.
A 97 Prado 3.4 V6 auto on petrol and LPG.
Recently developed a noise which I think may be transmission based.
When I go over 65 Km/h it develops a humming noise which gets louder when I go faster.
I've also noticed that when I go over any dips and undulations in the road the humming gets louder and deeper, almost metalic, at the bottom of the dip, almost pulsing as the suspension is compressed then when the suspension is normal again it goes back to the previous hum.
I've checked the gearbox oil, which was low so I topped it up to the correct level, it's quieter now but the hum is still there a little and the deeper noise is definitely still there when I go over/into a dip in the road.
All the suspension bits and pieces are in good order with nothing worn like bearings etc. on the steering, ball joints either.
I've read lots on here this afternoon and, please correct me if I'm wrong here, but the advice of others with similar issues seem to point to either rear propshaft UJ or Transfer box issues.
I can do the propshaft easily but have never attempted a transfer box removal/repair.
So, am I heading in the right direction with my prognosis? Or barking up the wrong tree?!
Look forward to hearing news from those in the know.
Many thanks, Jonneeb
