  • Changing front and rear diff oil on LC90?

    Hi guys,

I'm wondering how I should go about changing the front and rear diff oil on my auto KZJ90 running a 1KZTE?

What oil should I use and does someone have an oil change guide?

I've just heard that Toyota use Castrol ls90 diff oil.

How much are you meant to use in the front and rear diff?

Anyone know the final torque settings?

Just got an email from a guy at a Toyota dealership.

He said I should use LS90 in both the front and the rear diff.

He added that the rear will take 3 litres (but could differ) and the front would take approx 1.5 litres of diff oil.

But, how how can you check the oil levels in the diffs and know that you've got the right amount of oil in there?

When you fill them to the max point, oil will start to come out of the filler hole. That's when you put the bolt back into the hole quickly and wipe the little bit of mess afterwards. Bullseye, she's full.

I use one of those Tom Thumb 1 litre pump bottles to fill the diffs. Make's the task a bit easier.

If it's auto, 2.6L will fill the rear, and 1.1L will fill the front.
If you're ever not sure about which viscosity oil to use and don't have a manual to refer to, just punch in your car details on an oil manufacturers website and you'll find all the answers you need.

I've never worried about torque settings with those bolts. Just tighten them up by feel. But don't over tighten the rear diff bolts or you'll have a hell of a time undoing them a couple of years later. You doing the transfer case as well and transmission as well or just the diffs for now?
