  • Engine Management light flashes.

Hi Guys, I have a 98 prado with 1KZ-TE engine, done 210,000 k's. My engine management flashes on for about 3-5 seconds and then goes out. It only happens on the open road when going down a steep hill with your foot off the accelerator and the hill is steep enough to hold you at the same speed. ie you dont slow down when you button off the gas.It doesn't happen every time.
The two fault codes that come up are:

code 13 - RPM2 (NE) sensor signal fault and
code 14 - Timing control system problem.

There is no noticeable difference in the vehicle or no smoke or anything. It starts and runs perfectly. Any thoughts??

    Hi wallace,

As you don't get a warning lamp the majority of the time it is most likely not the sensor, in 95% of intermittent problems it is usually a connector or wiring problem.

Why? when under load the engine will lean one way, when going down hill motor is under opposite load ie engine being driven by down hill torque and lean the other way putting a different strain on connectors etc.

I would check all connectors around the engine as a starting point.

    Cheers
