  • Electrical or Mechanical...

This has probably been discussed, tried searching but found nothing

    1st issue
About two weeks back my Prado 1998 5vz started having a charge issue. i would drive and the radio would suddenly cut out out, then come back on again after about 10 seconds. immediately think its a battery issue. i then drove at night and i noticed that when im accelerating the lights are bright, but the moment i back off or brake they dim substantially to that candle light yellow.... the car also really battle to turn over and sometimes i think it has stopped turning and then it springs to life! very much like the last effort from a flat battery! it has also recently, last three days started idling very rough... needle hunting between 800-1000rpm.

What could the cause of this be???

    2nd issue.

driving home to day, i turned a corner and needed to accelerate up the hill and my cruiser started to cough and splutter... back off an then idle was ok... accelerate slowly and it seemed fine, accelerate normally and it coughed and spluttered again.
i then noticed that when driving the speedo and rev counter were working but as soon as i backed off they both felt back to "0" like when you switch the vehicle off....
limped home about 2km. Parked the cruiser and noticed that when in "D" there was no rev although the car was on and when i accelerate the engine rev but the needle does not budge! how ever, id "N" and "P" the rev needle jumps back to 800rpm. it also does so in "2" and "L" but not in "D" or "R"....
while idling i opened the bonnet and revved her slowly and all was fine, when i bliped the throttle coughing and spluttering again.....

This my daily drive so kinda need her fixed asap....

    HELP!

If the starter cranks slowly then speeds up I would be cleaning the battery terminals (remove off battery and clean posts and clamps) check for loose connections at earth point etc and clean any bolt on connections. Cheers Leigh

Neal, you. Have a problem somewhere between your alternator and battery most likely. You really need a millimeter to see what sort of vb oltages you are getting with the engine running at I'd let and at higher rpm and also switched off before and after starting.

I reckon your battery's screwed hence all the little gremlin problems your having, or maybe voltage regulator/alternator ?? Take it to either your local sparkie or battery world and get them to check it out. Probably coughing and spluttering and tacho going crazy due to voltage being irregular.... I'm not a auto lecce but that's where I'd be starting at first.... Cheers Steve

Thanks Guys, I will get a new battery anyhow. My alternator is currently an aftermarket one, i have an original and just need to have it rebuilt before i pop it in. just to be safe.

Before you throw in the new battery, get the alternator tested. A bad alternator can kill a battery pretty quickly.

get a multimeter to check your batt/voltage regulator/alternator to see if everything's in check. I once had similar problems on an old Mitsubishi Galant and it turns out a worker at a paint shop had connected the battery backwards (+ on earth and - on +) which runned as you described before it eventually fried my electrical components. Check that as well (id do so quickly if I were you)

So planted a new battery in there today, she fires up like shes on Steroids!!!
what still has me concerned is that when she starts she runs up to 1100rpm then drops to about 400rpm has a slight hesitation and then back to 1100rpm. When warmed for about 2 minutes idling settles at about 800rpm.

could this be a dirty Idle control? or MAF related?

May take a bit for it to settle after having new battery. Give it a day and see how it goes.... Cheers Steve
