  • Wiring a new stereo? Here's a diagram you'll need!

    Toyota's are a pain to sort out which wire does what when it comes to installing a headunit on any model. So I thought I might take the pain out of it for some. 8)
    Here is a connection list for a 90 series prado stereo headunit.

    There are two plugs: 1 x 10 pin & 1 x 6 pin

    On the 10 pin plug:

    Red = Battery +
    Green/Red stripe = Accessories
    Brown = Battery - / ground
    Black/Yellow stripe = Remote/power aerial
    Pink = LHF speaker
    Purple = LHF speaker
    Light Green = RHF speaker
    Blue = RHF speaker

    On the 6 pin plug:
    Black = LHR speaker
    Yellow = LHR speaker
    Red = RHR speaker
    White = RHR speaker

    Any other wires that are there you should not need for installing most aftermarket stereo's
    :idea: A tip is to solder any connections you make so the thing doesn't cut in and out in 100 k's time :?
    :idea: Also use insulation tape on each connection to prevent wires from touching and blowing fuses - a real nuicance. :x
    Do it once, do it right, then enjoy it!

    I hope this helps and good luck

            Mate you are a legend! I installed a new head unit and GME TX3200 radio without any hassles about which speaker is which!

            Thanks allot! Here are some pics of the install with the Din adapter for the TX3200.

              That sony unit looks pretty good. I was lazy so I purchased a universal loom from supercheap, Installation took all of 5minutes from start to finish, works a charm.

                Any tips on removing the dash to install a head-unit?
                Does that main surround just clip in place and some gentle prodding will pop it out?
                Any gotcha's that I'd need to look out for when I attempt my install this week? I don't want to break any clips off :shock:

                cheers

                  Yes it just clips in, start at the bottom and pull evenly on both sides.

                  They can be tight so make sure you don't twist it to one side as you pop it out.

                  When you refit it ensure you have the top vent ducting clipped in place correctly too.

                    This info was very helpful, but needs an addition.

                    For a 96 base model prado the red wire in the ten pin plug as mentioned above is actually a blue wire with a yellow trace. This wire has continuous power. Just swapped out my stereo on the weekend.

                    cheers

                      I have always started at the top when removing the facia plate, turn bith vents so they face down, then get your fingers in there and pull firmly.
                      I have just fitted a pioneer CD ipod thingo and it was dead easy, factory brackets lined up with holes in the head unit. I have never been a fan of cutting up the factory wiring looms so I got a plug in kit from supercheap for $20. its all colour coded then too.

                          Hey guys!

                          Just reading this, hoping someone can clarify for me.

                          I've just ordered a Sony CDX-GT45IP stereo for the Prado. I asked the person I ordered it from will it need a wiring loom adapter and he assured me it wouldn't.

                          Can anyone confirm whether I will or not? If so I'll whip down to SuperCheap and grab one. I had to have an adapter for my Pioneer in my Lux?

                          Cheers

                            Hello everyone,

                            My first Prado install and it's my own,

                            Has anyone removed the double din head unit and changer set up? does the wiring differ across models?

                            I'm not using any of the factory wiring bar the lights and ignition inputs, so as long as these are same it's all good.

                            Kind regards,

                            Rich

                              Thanks all for the info above. I had a problem when installing a new CD/Radio in my 2005 Prado in that the radio reception was very poor. Yes, I'd moved the antenna plug across to the new unit. What some readers may already know but I just discovered is that the Prado rear side window antennae have an RF amplifier that requires power. I subsequently connected the "+12v Power Antenna" output from my new radio to the "Black/Yellow stripe = Remote power/aerial" wire from the 10-pin plug. However on my Prado this wire was just black.... no yellow stripe. It now works a treat.
