Hi all. I am a new member and own a 1997, Prado. 3.4lt petrol. Over the past few days I have been having a very annoying electrical problem with it, and am after some help if possible please. 80% of the time when I go to start it, I suddenly have no power/electrics anymore. I have spent some time and tried to identify when this cut-out actually occurs, but can not find out why. There is no problem when I initially turn the key (and all of the dash lights etc. come on), but when I turn the key the next click (to start), all of the power goes. This is like someone has suddenly removed the battery or something. At this point, if I turn the key back and forth, nothing changes. It is the same as trying to start a vehicle that has no battery. The only way that I can get it started, is to remove the Positive battery terminal...wait... and the put this back on. I am guessing that this may reset the issue and then for some reason, it allows it to start. I have cleaned all of the battery terminals and have had a look at the obvious issues it could be. If anyone could help, I would be very appreciative. Cheers. Aaron.

Had the same issue once , it was a weird thing , and yes it was a failing connection to one of the leads.I was suspecting and a mechanic was convinced it was the starter motor , i was kicking myself for ages for not picking it up earlier , only found it accidentally by moving a lead as i was jump starting it . A good clean and a tighten and all good .

Just an idea, the negative lead goes to the vehicle body. If this doesn't have a good connection you might get these symptoms.
It's not called an electrical circuit for nothing, check the WHOLE power circuit, from the positive terminal to the starter motor,
to the body earth and from the body back to the negative terminal.
I had to do this with a car that sat idle for a few months. Remove, spray, clean and replace.
