  • Fusing a dual battery system

I have now finally got all the stuff to fit the dual battery system.
Every other circuit I run has a fuse fitted of varying size.
Do I fit a fuse to the cable between the two batteries, if so what size (I am using a Projecta 100 amp isolator)
I am running power to the rear of the Prado, in the rear is the fridge, LED lights and ARB compressor, what size fuse should I run? due to the length of the run I am using 2B&S cable so it is very thick (35mm squared)
any suggestions would be appreciated or do I use circuit breakers?

    Thanx in advance

I only have 6B&S cable, but I have a 50 amp large blade fuse at one end of the run and a 50amp manual reset circuit breaker at the other end. As you could be getting power from both ends you need to fuse both ends. If your cable run is short enough and possibility of rubbing through or earthing out is extremely unlikely you may get away with no fuses, i.e. batteries along side each other.

I have my battery mounted in the rear with a separate fuse box there for all the do dads to run off, 2B&S cable seems like overkill to me if as I understand it, your battery is in the front of the vehicle and its just a power run to the rear?

    Cheers Andrew

Agreed 2B&S is over the top.

Very large cable, as above not required and makes it hard to terminate on fuse blocks etc.

Lowest rating fuse required is my motto, I would go with a fuse around the size AJ120 mentioned 50A
to protect the main run as your unlikely to exceed that with the accessories mentioned, I assume your
going to install a distribution fuse box and fuse each branch accordingly.

Hardly surprising you would agree with me, I probably went that size after reading something you posted suggesting it was the way to go

              Guys
thanks for the replies, I will be fusing both ends of the run,
The reason why I went 2B&S was that's what the Redarc site recommended in their calculator.
Will be terminating the rear with a fuse then a Anderson plug, then it will split into a feed for a fused box for fridge and lights, the other feed will go into the ARB Air compressor mounted in the back, making it so the fridge/lights section can be removed as the fridge box is removable. I worked out the amperage (hence the 2B&S) from the 30 amp fuse on the air compressor and 5 amps for the fridge (worst case scenario). Will use a manual reset breaker both ends unless there is a reason not to
