  • Catch Can installation

Couldn't find much pictorial info re catch can installation so here's a few from the one I just installed.

Having removed the inter-cooler so I could give it a clean out, you will see a nickel plated pipe running from the rocker cover down to the turbo inlet (no pic) connected by a short rubber hose at each end..
Remove it as that where the catch can plumbs in.
This is the new oil resistant pipe connected to the rocker cover-

The rocker cover hose is run behind the heater hose to keep it away from the inter-cooler inlet pipe which gets hot.
Haven't decided where the turbo hose end should go yet as the exhaust area might burn it.
    Comments on this welcome...

My engines done 270K which is why I decided to pull the cooler and inlet manifold and clean it all.
Very little gunk in the cooler, just a light coating of oil. Same with the original link pipe.
This pic is of my throttle body. As its so clean, I didn't bother pulling the manifold after all.

No idea why its so clean. Bit of a mystery that.

    G'day MalcomM,
There doesn't seem to be much info for putting a catch can on a 1KZ-TE, all the cans seem to be on the 1KD.
As far as I can see, the 1KZ would suffer from the same problems with gunking of the inlet manifold even though your throttle butterfly was quite clean. I haven't had a look at mine yet, but if it is dirty I will go the catch can route.
Thank you for sharing your installation on PP.
    Cheers,
    Foxo.

Here's an update now that I have sorted out the hoses.
Thanks ########## for your thoughts on this.

Originally I had removed the factory pipe that runs between the turbo and the rocker cover. I had a can hose connected to the turbo end of things but couldn't find a nice way to mount it without friction rubbing.
Well that pipe has been reinstalled but its had the rocker cover end straightened out so that it now sits just below the original rocker cover mounting position.
That allows a much easier hose run alongside the other hose between the can and cover.

Compare this pic of the factory pipe to your own car and you'll see the difference.

There's some sleeving on the hose where it passes behind the heater hoses. The whole lot is cable tied at this point to prevent vibration abrasion. A couple of thou road Km's and several hundred off road Km's and all is good.

Where did you get the catch can? Does it come as a kit with hoses, fittings, etc.?

          Ebay.
Cames complete with all the nipples etc, you just need to source some oil resistant hose locally.

Do an Ebay search. Mine was the same unit without the nice label. Well under half that price.

Just make sure it does not have any filter material (steel wool etc) in it. If that breaks down or comes loose, it will be sucked into the turbo.
Its just an empty container that you want.

Thanks Malcom - where else huh?!
The reason I ask if because I pulled the intercooler off the other day so I could change the glow-plugs and I found the air pipes coming from the turbo were coated inside with oil, in fact, I'd even had oil leaking out one of the hose connections. I'm not sure if this oil is coming from the rocker cover vent (which attaches just upstream of the turbo) or from worn/damaged seals in the turbo itself. There certainly seems to be some oil coming from the rocker cover, but I'm not sure if it's all coming from there - fitting a catch can should eliminate one of the two likely sources...

Well there will always be some oily residue in there but mine certainly wasn't dripping although quite slimy. So far I have nothing caught up in the catch can.
Main thing is that you don't have any hard carbon deposits building up in there which is a good sign.

Not my area but if the turbo had worn seals etc around the turbo, I'd expect a lot of burnt oil smoke from the exhaust.

Bottom line is that fitting the can is a cheap and easy thing to do, and after seeing a couple of D4D's that required a total rebuild from coked up heads,. it buys piece of mind.
I cleaned out all that crap with carburettor cleaner. Sure blew a lot of smoke when I tried to start it up again
Fit the can. Its only $30 or so and you know where you stand then.

Hi Malcolm, I'm not sure what you mean by 'hard carbon deposits' but the oil felt quite gritty when I tried to clean it out (I thought if clean it out as best I can, and then check again after a few weeks of driving around, it may be easier to identify the problem).

I certainly haven't noticed burnt oil smoke (which I expect would be blue), though it does put off a bit of black smoke if I stick my boot in going up a hill.

Thanks, I'll certainly look at fitting a catch can.

The hard carbon is what happens when the crap solidifies and builds up in the inlet manifold. Can also build up in teh combustion chamber and bugger things nicely.

Black smoke is usually unburnt fuel. Might be time for an injector service.
Over fueling results ion excessive engine heat.

                      Go the catch can!

Just dragging this thread back up. I'm putting a catch can in a 1kzte (prado 95 series). Does anyone know the diameter of the pipe fitting that I need on the catch can please for the hose. Most on eBay seem to be advertising 10mm diameter fittings but that sounds a little small ?
                        Cheers

                        Edit. It's 19mm or 3/4" ID

                            Hey Alan
Not yet. Have only just ordered it off ebay. I'll post up soon.
I'm in two mind about filling it up inside to act as a filter. Some on here are saying leave it empty as you don't want any wire wool etc breaking off. Some say use foam inside but then decided it was overkill. A good mate of mine is saying fill it or try to put a baffle in it. I dunno...
The one that's coming is empty so I guess I'll see how she goes...

Don't put steel wool in it, just asking for trouble.

Fit a perforated baffle plate vertically between the inlet and outlet. That lets the oil condense without risk.
