  • 1KZTE 3L TD engine - any hints re. ppl who know prado's?

    Hi prado lovers
What I'm chasing is info (or contacts for clued up people) about the 1KZTE 3L TD engine, found in 90 series and early 120 series prado's.
I sucked mud through my 90 series engine a few months back (clever I know) and have had to clean out the intake tubes, turbo, intercooler, intake manifold, fitted a new head, new glow plugs, rings, bearings, head gasket, hoaned the cylinders and got the injectors serviced (new nozzles, etc). Since the rebuild it is a pig to start when cold, and blows smoke and misses like you wouldn't believe when cold from idle up to about 1200 - 1300 rpm.
Once engine is up to temp, no probs at all ??????????
We've done compression tests, taken the injectors back to get re-tested, checked the fuel pump timing, checked out all the intake system for blockages, checked all electrical connectors are ok.
We've done about 12000 k's since rebuild with this being our only thorn.
We believe it may be a fuel pump issue but aren't sure and neither is anyone around here who claims to be a mechanic. It also seems wierd that it would be the fuel pump, given that it was only removed during rebuild then refitted??
Most diesels have mechanically controlled fuel pumps, but not the prado!! Toyota in their wisdom made them electrically controlled, so finding a cluey person is difficult to say the least!!!
Our local dealer simply looked blankly in reply to any of my questions. :?
If anyone has had similar probs or has any info i would appreciate it and then some!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Oh, and don't worry.................................I ordered a snorkel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have you checked the glowplug preheat system? Could be one is faulty. I had previously a Toyota 2H 6 cylinder Diesel which had similar symptoms. In that case I think it was only 3 were open circuit but it stopped the engine from being started at all. You may have only one faulty...either electically or mechanically....and that is making it hard to start.

Not knowing the effects on the 1kzte...it may be that if the whole system is not working you may get your symptoms. I suggest an inspection of the electrical cables, the associated relays etc.

    Cheers

Maybe - not enough diesel served to the engine.
I solved the same prob :

Check/change diesel filter (clean out water inside)

.... some those difficulties comming with poor exhaust conditions...

            Mick,

My money would be on air in the fuel (overnight and small air leak with fuel draining back). Does it make any difference if the weather is hot or cold?? 1 glow plug down should not make to much difference on a summers morning with the engine temp already at 25c (maybe a slight misfire for a few seconds). Hope this helps

            Cheers Ben

Thanks to everyone who weighed in with their advice, etc.
