Hi Guys, long time lurker first time poster. Hoping someone can help me out with a problem I have with my '97 KZJ95 TZ Prado with 1KZ-TE engine.
On numerous random occasions the engine won’t idle (unless given throttle), runs very rough and blows white smoke. The car can be limped short distances when this happens but I am reluctant to keep driving like this. This has happened in both very hot and very cold weather. Has happened whilst driving along, when started first thing in the morning and also when stopped then started. Runs fine for a month or so then randomly happens again. Has also cleared by itself multiple times
As a result I have now had the car towed twice to two different specialist diesel workshops: First time they claimed vacuum hose was off; Second time: claimed dirty electrical connectors to diesel pump (also sprayed aerostart into intake with no improvement, compression tested low but all even (300psi, 290psi, 290psi, 300psi).
Recently the engine has had new glow plugs, new fuel filter and recond injectors. Problem has occurred both before and after all of the above. I have also cleaned the MAP sensor filter. There has been no loss of coolant or overheating and no increase in oil level and priming hand pump doesn’t help. The check engine light has not yet come on.
I am at a loss as to what is causing it as it seems fine for many weeks then becomes essentially undriveable. I am a former motor mechanic with little diesel experience so want to try and resolve this myself before undergoing more expense with towing and workshops. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
