  • Intermittent Engine Shudder and Shutdown

I have a 1kz-te Prado. The symptoms I am having are as follows. The engine runs perfectly otherwise no noises from the engine, turbo kicks in smoothly when needed. However there are times when on startup the engine shudders like its not getting any fuel when left in idle and if I drive it the engine will cut off when I am on the road and since its an automatic, i have to put it in park and turn the ignition off and then turn it on and it will work like a charm after that. Also if I wait for about 2 to 4 mins in idle after i startup and notice the shudders starting after waiting for this time when i drive it, it works fine after that. Any ideas on what could be causing this?? As I mentioned this is very intermittent including the shutdown otherwise the engine runs very smoothly. HELP!!!! The engine cutting off when I am on the road is too risky!!!

Have you checked for ECU fault codes?

        1. Turn ignition OFF, throttle fully closed, air conditioner OFF, auto trans in P or N.

        2. Turn ignition ON but do not start the engine.

        3. Short terminals TE1 and E1 of the check connector (In engine bar near power steering fluid) using a wire.

The codes are read by counting the flashes of the Check engine light on the dash. A continuous on/off means no codes recorded.

All other codes are two digit, there is a 2 second pause between digits and a 5 second second pause between codes.

Example; 5 second pause.....3x flashes..... 2 second pause..... 5x flashes...5 second pause, would be code 35 (boost sensor btw)

Let us know what codes you get if any.....

Have replaced the Fuel filter as I suspect it might have been getting clogged so I am waiting to see if its fixed now as this morning she started up without any glitches.....keeping my fingers crossed and will post back after a day or two on results.

ECU codes read normall... continuos on/off flashing. Also the surprising thing was that when I replaced the diesel fuel filter it had stopped doing this for two days and gradually came back after the third day.....so far it hasnt cut off the engine when driving, but at times in the morning the engine sort of revs on its own - I even popped open the bonnet to see if the accelerator cable moves on its own "gremlins" but nothing, all you see is the engine turn like when you increase the throttle. any assistance advise would really help ease the pain!!!

Hmm I wonder if it could be the pump... spill control valve playing up maybe?

Have you checked all electrical connections related to engine management?

By the way, you don't have an after market tuning "chip" installed do you?

no after market tuning chip installed everything is "oem" toyota..also if it was electrical connections wouldnt it play up when driving as well? I just went for a spin and was perfect after reving it two or three times. I also suspect it to be the pump - how do i check the spill control valve?? There is no water in the fuel filter reserve only "diesel" How do i eliminate the fuel pump??

I think you're at the stage were you need to consider taking it to a diesel mechanic.
The only other thing you may consider is getting a workshop manual and working through some of the trouble shooting flow charts.

The problem with where I live is there arent any proper diesel mechanics..... they will beat around the bush and charge me for replacing stuff that wont even be faulty. should I wing it and try changing the diesel pump as I suspect it could be the one letting fuel flow back to the tank and thats why starting is okay but when the fuel is burnt in the engine it then pulls the vaccum/air thats left behind causing the abrupt increase in the engine turning over and then when I hit the accelerator it sorts itself out??

Changing the pump is going to be expensive ($1000-$1500 change over from what I hear) and you may be no better off.

If you want to persist with DIY then get a factory repair manual and start going through some of the trouble shooting flow charts.

1000$$ ?? what pump are you refering to? I am talking about the pump where the diesel filter is attached with two electrical wires sticking out of it where it connects to the wiring of the car. This doesnt cost more than 100$$ where I live.

What I have done so far,
                              A. I replaced the fuel pipe intake which was very loose going into the fuel filter pump section but that didnt help.

                              B. I replaced the fuel filter pump itself since it might have been letting fuel drop back into the tank but that still didnt fix the problem

The symptoms have been getting worse so far and now when the car is parked for 9 hours it will start with no problems but will then increase the revs and the engine shutsdown. If you look at back from the exhaust it takes out a cloud of black smoke. Then when you attempt to restart it, it restarts with no problems and then again the revs increase on its own and again black smoke out the back and the engine shutsdown. After the second time when you restart it, it cranks straight away and stays on this time and will not idle smoothly for around 2mins or so and then its fine. When driving it after this there are no shutdowns or rough idling or anything else and works 100% no issues....If someone can guide me as to what it is that exactly could be causing this it would be great help....the engineers in my area dont know much about diesel engines and will muck up the entire system.......Any more advise would be appreciated.
