firstly. location in ya profile, as per forum rules.

secondly. the pump you are referring to is the primer pump.
mick is talking about the injection pump.

third. have you checked all the air intake plumbing, including intake manifold.

mick is possibly on the right track with the pump.
it could also be a leaky injector.

you need to have it checked by a deisel mechanic.
you need specialist tools to check this stuff.

To me it sounds like a temperature issue.....i.e. when the engine is cold it is playing up....

It could be a dodgy engine (water) temperature reading such that the engine is trying to run as though it is hot but in fact it is stone cold.

The increasing revs is also weird....this engine is controlled by a computer after all. My only guess is that at idle it has a set program for fuel etc & fuel injection timing & the amout of fuel &/or the injection timing varies with water temperature & as such this is resulting in it playing up until the engine actually reaches near operating temperature.

In addition the 1kz-te has a fuel temperature sensor & an air intake temperature sensor as well. Either of these being faulty could also cause similar issues I would think.

According to my "Max Ellery's" Prado manual...
& depending on the age of your Prado....
Pre Aug 2000 uses ECU Terminals, newer models use Terminal ID
So format of table is ...
      ECU/Terminal,Sensor & Notes,Expected Voltage
      THA-E2/E6-22 - E6-20,Engine idling, air intake 0deg to 60 deg, 0.2-3.8
      THW-E2/E6-14 - E6-20,Engine idling,coolant temp 60deg to 120deg, 0.1-1.5
      THF-E2/E6-5 - E6-20,Fuel temp Ign on engine cold,0.5-3.8

Further, for Rough Idling & for black smoke, the Coolant Temp sensor is listed as a possible cause.

Anyway a few things to check there I know, but hopefully it will help.

      Cheers

What I have noticed is I have to wait a bit around a minute when I start it and it works fine without these issues.......before i never had to wait this long to crank it. Normally around 20seconds before cranking and it was fine now i wait and then everthing is dandy...does this put light on what is the problem???

Not sure on the Intermittent nature of this but it sounds to me like either your fuel system is sucking air form somewhere. Have a look along the file delivery line from the tank and see if there are any bleeding marks.

Yes, the sucking of air into the fuel line seems to be the most popular diagnosis from all the diesel experts I've spoken to about a similar problem with my 1KZTE.

I was advised to manually prime the fuel pump and see if the problem goes away. Well guess what, after 15 or so pumps it finally stiffened up and started without a single miss or smoke. So that suggested it was sucking in air. Now I just have to find where the air is coming in.

Re: Intermittent Engine Shudder and Shutdown

This problem got worse and started shutting down the engine while I was on the road. I decided to open out the ECU and check if there was anything wrong with it. On closer inspection I found out that a few of the capacitors inside had leaked the liquid and caused a corrosion on the board. Hence the issue of it shuutting down and causing all these problems. I got the capacitors replaced by an electronic expert and so far even with the weather raining and it getting cold in the morning she starts back up like she used to.....hopefully this problem is fixed for now. Am on day 4 now with no worries....lets hope it stays that way!! Hopefully this will help somebody with a similar issue like what I was having.
Thanks for all the advice I got......
