  • Primer Pump Failure

I posted a topic about Glow plugs that Toyota thought were the reason I was getting rough idle and exhaust smoke on cold start up.

Well the problem didn't go away. So after speaking to some independant diesel specialists it must be related to an air leak in the fuel system.

So they found a loose hose connection when replacing the fuel filter, that must be it. Better but still not perfect. Seems after a little more research by the Toyota Brains Trust, that the primer pump diaphram are likely to fail. It appears to be a common problem with the 1KZTE engine. Funny how no one seems to know about it.

It can't be inspected or repaired as its a sealed unit, why wouldn't it be. So I now wait 3-4 weeks for one to come from Nippon.

Not one I've heard of to be "common". The same pump is used on several Toyota diesel motors/models, I think even the d4d is identical :?:

Have a look on Ebay, there was a complete genuine new pump and filter on a while ago. I remember thinking it was cheap too, around the cost of just a new filter.

      Mick,

sorry, but just because you might not have heard of it doesn't mean it isn't so. All the advice I got was after some research by the Toyota Service I use. Their words, "its a common fault".

The part might be the same for both models but they don't have them here in Australia.

Also the car is on lease so Toyota can get the parts, but thanks for the Ebay tip.
