  • Runaway Diesel

    Hi all.

Has anyone experienced a runaway diesel in a Prado? Just wondered how common this is in Prado's with high km. I know the 1KZ is a tough motor but is it immune to runaway? From what I have heard in other vehicles it is not a pleasant or cheap experience.

    Re: Runaway Diesel

I don't recall seeing anything about this on the forum, however, I can certainly relate to the "runaway diesel" experience when I had a TD Jackaroo  The thing accelerated (not a huge amount luckily) while driving along a main road & then the engine self destructed :!:

Only had the thing for a month :!: I had bought it from a used car yard so they had to fix it under the statutory 3 months warranty Heard through the grapevine it cost them $8500 to repair :P

    Cheers,

Bet they changed the oil and put the wrong grade in which stuffs the injection timing.

$8.5k is a cheap rebuild for a jack.

The 1kz runs a throttle plate in the intake which fully closes and cuts the intake air on shut down (for smoother shut downs). This would make it immune to becoming a runaway engine. No air = no burn.

I had a runnaway diesel in the Northern Territory years a go in landcruider, might have had something to do with when stopping for a roo, the fuel can fell off the roof rack and spilling half it's diesel on the bonnet....it stopped after a minute or two of revving out to the max.

Apologies for the grave-dig but I think this story might be of interest:

I have experienced 30 seconds or so of what I'm 99% sure was runaway in the 1KZ powered 90 series we just bought.

Coming up the freeway out out Adelaide on the weekend I dropped back to 3rd to pull into a gap in the right hand lane. I got the revs up to around 3500 and when I went to change to 4th the engine took off towards redline as soon as I pressed the clutch in. After a couple of seconds of panic and a half dozen circles with the gearstick I found 5th and got the revs down again.
The car continued to pull up the hill without me pushing the accelerator for another couple of hundred meters with pretty decent stream of grey smoke out the back before it settled down and went back to normal. I drove it home slowly without further trouble.

When I got home I had a look under the bonnet. When I checked the dipstick I discovered the oil was at least 50mm over the full line! I have since taken it back to the dealership who we bought it from and who serviced it before I picked it up. They dropped the oil out and confirmed that it had at least a couple of litres too much oil in it.

I ran it up over 3500rpm a few times on the same stretch of road tonight without it happening again so I feel pretty certain that what I experienced on the weekend was caused by a bit of oil from the overfull sump being blown out the breather into the inlet.

That's is insane , they must have put 10L of oil in it, they will blame the apprentice for that.

thanks for sharing the story with us.

I rebuilt a Cat D6 once and at smoko went down town to get a custard tart (we had real ones in them days) and told the apprentice to 'fill it with all'.

Went to check it before start up and it flowed out the dipstick hole. You guessed it. Filled to the top of the rocker cover

                  My bad.

I've also had a case of the runaway diesel in my old 4runner. Long story short overtaking a truck plus a very surpised roo equaled one rolled 4runner (I don't blame the truckie for not stopping as he probably never saw me) after an hour of righting the old bus I let it settle for 30minutes before starting it. It started well but had trouble holding revs untill I got them above 2k and then it just took off... I stalled it out in first once it reached 3500, scared shitless i waited another 20minutes before and it ran fine like it never happened. The 4runner was a rightoff (too much pannel damage) but it's out at the stations still being used as a runabout.
