The gasket was good quality (made in Japan), new bolts (btw. Toyota gives permission to use old ones, if they are thick enough), cooling system is at very good condition, no towing, no highway speeds, no immediately shut downs after long term driving. I donīt understand why you say the head which is cracked after 4 months usage, is not bad quality head.... I think it is crap, not quality at all (athough it looks fine).

I know they can make a good quality product in China, if they want, or somebody demands. But aftermarket parts are what ever happens to be.

Yes.... I worded my last post badly. I was not meaning to say that you were stupid, or that the head that you purchased was good quality.
I was speaking very generally and should have made that clearer.

        Re: 1KZ Cracked Head

And cracked again!!! After 4 months/6500 km. Do NOT buy a chinese (eBay) head. Inside the 4. cylinder combustion chamber is crack, symptoms were now just like Tiger_DFT told. Same failure too.

I think you were just unlucky... the "Genuine" Toyota heads are cast in China as well.... I guess the danger in buying from Ebay is the possibility you are getting seconds/units that didn't quite pass quality control and are being sold out of the factory back door.

          Re: 1KZ Cracked Head

Chinese heads can be ok but they still need to have the pre combustion chambers looked at as they never get the height rite on installtion it also wouldnt hurt to change them to stein brand as the chinese pre co chamber are not too good it also pays to get the valves re seated and a better skim on the head ,and with gaskets use genuine Toyota head gaskets and always after replacing a head find out what caused the problem originally , to much boost ? check the cooling and fuel system and allways change coolant with genuine coolant ( as you can not get much better )and NO additives on the recomended intervals as well as the oil . I have allways done the coolant change reguarly and NEVER had a problem with my vehicles over heating

              Just a note:
My son had a cracked head on is Hilux Surf 1 KZ motor. It was using 12L water a day on our Cape trip. A can of chemiweld fixed it, and its been going fine ever since (three yrs). It may be a cheap option to try first.

I've got a Prado 2002 with the 1KZTE and basically all the symptoms you guys have said is whats happening to mine. I bought mine with 310K on it and less that 6 months and only a couple of long trips it appears the head is cracked. Dont know if the previous owners have changed it or not as theres nothing in the service book about it. Anyway I'm changing mine over week after next. I'm getting the AMC brand just like Theroo advised. I spoke to the guys at SMS Diesel and they advise against the chinese made ones too. Its not a huge difference in cost with a complete head, gaskets, bolts etc for $1450 for the chinese one and about $1550 for the AMC one. Going to change the timing belt, water pump, tensioner and idler pully while I'm at it.

Hi Guys, just picked up a '00 GXL turbo diesel with a engine problem.
A bit of research says its probably the head.
A few checks and we tend to agree.
After a bit more research including on here i have now purchased a complete AMC head from SMS in Perth.
Should be here tomorrow and will then strip it down and do the swap.
After reading about the originals and the cheap ebay ones im not chancing a cheap head.

Gotta love lazy owners that quit a car instead of fixing.

Well im very happy with the AMC head , sweet looking bit of gear.
I have done about 3000km in the last 5 weeks.
Has run fantastic and just did the bigger dump pipe and 3" exhaust.
                      Brilliant vehicle now.
Thanks for the input from ##########.

MUMSRIG also sports an AMC head. I wouldn't touch a Chinese one....

                              Hi,

It looks like I'm up for a new head, mine has cracked after 240,000km. My mechanic is recommending a replacement from All Heads in Melbourne. Has anyone dealt or used a head from these guys before or can provide a recommendation on the quality of the head? I gave them call but they haven't been able to tell me yet where they source their heads from. Thanks.

Have been sing All Heads for years, good to deal with and never had a problem with their product. Getting one for a 1KZ from them as we speak.
