  • How to reduce Fuel Use?

Hi after doing a quick search nothing really came up.
    I drive a 2000 GXL on LPG (68L usable)
    and she's done 260,000k's
Coopers ATR's on with about 2mm tread left so due for a change.
    Automatic w/roof racks too.

My fuel usage has gone from 320-360km per tank average down to 220-240km (City driving + trailer + tools)
and 400km max down to 300km (highway driving)

This is an increase in consumption from 17-20L/100km to 22-28l/100km
When the racks were added it went from 360 down to 340 but its gone down to 220 since november.

I recently had a full LPG dyno and had a oil and filter change and auto trans full flush

Before november the car had never really been off road but ive taken it away a few times now.
Im back at uni now so i cant afford the fuel costs like this.
Just wondering if I can get a people advice on what to do. (any recommended mechanics in melb, inner east, etc)

    thanks for any comments

Get either a K&N Filter or a UniFilter, both great and will slightly improve your economy. My economy was improved by 5-10% just by putting a UniFilter in.
Other than that, that actually sounds about normal for a 90 (which guzzles fuel) with LPG on it and towing with a load.

Remember everything like mud tyres and roof racks will cut down fuel use too.

Not sure if he's done a lot of LPG, but give Ontrack Automotive a call. they're out in Ferntree Gully but I travel 25km each way to go there, fantastic service and knowledge and specialise in 4x4's

Large tyres cost fuel. Only fit a larger size if you REALLY need the extra few mm of ground clearance

I understand that the car drinks a fair bit. my issue is the huge spike in consumption in a period of 6 months...

like i said i was getting 360km per tank (6months ago) and driving in the same conditions now i get 220-260km.

Hey dmck. I've got the same problem. When the gas system was new the best I got was just over 400 km from 68 L. Now we can't get 300 km with the same AT tyres and a lift kit and snorkle. I've recently had two tune ups ( one on dyno) and done a full service incl valve shim, plugs, leads etc with no improvement. I'm at a dead end too. I know there are things I can change like exhaust system to get improvements but I want to get back to where we were without major changes.
I'm thinking about pulling the converter apart to see if it needs a clean out or overhaul. Pretty pissed off with the drop in economy and if I can't improve it I'll probably look for something else.

Does the MAF sensor need a clean?

Do you use LPG only or petrol as well? It may be useful to know the LPG economy in comparison to petrol economy.
If it's only the LPG economy that is worse, perhaps it's a leak?

Ignition problems maybe. How is the engine on power since the spike in fuel use? You could be running on 3 cylinders

power is down but i cant hear any noticeable changes in the motor...

i wouldnt know about how much petrol it uses as i only use petrol when my gas tank runs dry to get em to the next servo.

it is slightly harder to start and im getting a little smoke... but that goes away after its warm...

                        Can be from many things
What is the smoke from, oil or fuel, is the smoke grey (oil), or black (fuel), when you run on gas, do you have an upper cylinder lubricant.
What type of oil are you using, is the MAF sensor clean, is the throttle position sensor clean, ect.

Smoke is only on colder mornings so could just be steam (but it steams alot more than any other car.) its a white colour.
I use Penrite HPR gas for the oil and I havent had to top up in between services (7-8000kms)
and the car has a upper cylinder lube bottle as well.

I clean the MAF but dont know about the throttle position sensor...

any further info on this? im going to do a search now too..

Still dont know what the throttle position sensor is but i gave the throttle body a clean. pumped the tyres up to 40psi (were at about 32-35) and filled the tank to the brim so we'll see how things go out of this tank. I also tightened any LPG hoses to ensure no leakage in the lines.

Ill post back when this tank is run out. Let me know if anyone can tell me more about the throttle position sensor
