  • Help Requried: V6 Gas Backfire

    Gday Fellas,

I have been a long time reader / sparse poster on this forum, and have owned my 1996 Prado for a little while now. Last year, before heading overseas for some training, I was driving my Playdo around when, pulling up to a roundabout, it ran out of LPG, causing a MAMMOTH backfire (scared both myself and the police officers in the vehicle next to me)

After an hour of searching, we concluded we could see nothing amiss, and I subsequently drove the vehicle home. This was when I noticed my problem. The car felt as if it was missing a few cylinders (a sick "boxer" type sound). After speaking to a few mechanics, as well as some mates that work with, it was highly suggested that I had blown a vacuum hose / part somewhere along the line.

Some $$$'s later, and all of the vacuum hoses replaced, still no joy. Perhaps the timing belt had jumped... so that was changed too (along with every other belt while I was there).. Still no joy. This was December last year, and at that stage I was getting ready to move interstate (to South Australia) so the car was unhappily driven up onto a truck and transported down.

Arriving in Adelaide, it was suggested that perhaps I had broken the MAF sensor, so, $$$$'s later, new MAF sensor, still runs like it is missing cylinders. That brings me to this morning, and I am quite frankly out of ideas. the two quotes from mechanic workshops have left me uneasy about taking it to a mechanic. One wanted $750 + parts to find what was going on (I chose not to go with him because he gave me a high price, which he was able to increase if he wanted and he still had no idea what it was, even though I told him what I had done, he still was rambling about vacuum hoses)

The other mechanic told me it was a interference engine and that I need to replace the engine (pfft... )

I now turn to you guys in the hope that some of the members on this forum might now of a reputable mechanic in the northern suburbs of Adelaide (I live in the Munno Para region) or are mechanically minded themselves who might be able to give me more insight.

    Cheers

    Alby

My guess is, that you may have burnt a valve from the back fire. have you had a compression test??

I had this happen years ago in a different vehicle.

It ended up settling out of court after a mammoth bill from Mitsubishi... Turned out all it was in the end was a paper filter element in the aircleaner MAF body had folded over restricting airflow...
They returned the car with the same issue after a 4k bill... I found and fixed it myself...

LPG is VERY reliant on a decent spark..
I used to replace plugs every 10k and make sure you have VERY decent leads. Not standards, TOP GUN made my leads with heatshields etc. never had another issue after that.

Do you know if it has a donut or gas carby? If it's a donut then that wouldn't be damaged by a backfire but a gas carby most definitely would. What gas system is on it?
It may be worthwhile getting a compression test, easy to do and cheap just to rule it out.
And +1 to what Piggy said.

Does the problem differ when running on petrol or gas?

If your compression test gives lower readings on a cylinder or two, try squirting oil into their sparky ports, then repeat the compression test on thost cylinders. If still low, a leaky valve or head gasket is probable. If the compression test improves, a leaky ring is probable.

Otherwise could a coil need replacing, not that it would be effected by a backfire?

I didn't think the MAF is used when running on LPG?

For a decent gas mechanic I used to use graham west mechanics at parkeholme. They have a 4 wd dyno too for troubleshooting.

this is a regular duel fuel problem ,you need to find a gas specific mechanic not your regular mech (they usually have no idea ). hope you still have your airbox still intact , ie. it hasn't been blown to smithereens .
