  • air conditioner belt

just a quick question. i was trying to change the fan belts in my 3.8L GXL prado 98'. i was succesful in losening two of the belts but the air conditioner belt i could not budge. i losened the adjustment bolt but could not seem to budge the idler pully.

am i missing something. some ideas on how to do this would be great. and of course this belt is the worst out of the lot.

    thanks

    Matt

    Matt,
You need to loosen the lock nut on front of the tensioner as well. the adjusting bolt is just that, and should'nt actually hold the tension for the belt. From memory it's a 12mm headed bolt. Hope this helps

Yep loosen the nut on the front of the idler pulley a bit, and then use the bolt on the backside to adjust the belt. When adjusted tighten the pulley nut back up.
            Mine were both 12mm.

What size belt are you guys running, I got a 4PK875 supplied in my Gates belt and hose pack and as a spare Bosh one I bought from Super Cheap earlier on. They are listed as the correct size in the book but the one I removed was only an 850, or 25 mm shorter.
I can fit the 875 on, and have done so, but bottom out on the adjustment when it is about the correct tension, but I’ll be stuffed when the belt stretches.

I plan to take the Bosh belt back and swap it for an 850.

Weird, wonder if the idler or crank pulley is not the correct size or something.

Any chance you could measure the diameter of your idler pulley Brisprado, I would like to know what isn’t right.

The other two belts fitted OK and are the correct ones as listed, not a huge problem, now I know it has a weird size there, but is a bummer when you buy them as a set.
