  • MAF and Premium Petrol

Early in my Prados life I had a fair amount of problems with the MAF sensor, 1 replaced under warranty and cleaning about every 10,000k, all while using Standard unleaded, I then switched to premium and I have now travelled 60,000k without any sign of the MAF being fouled. Is it possible that Premium fuel prevents the fouling of the MAF.

Never used premium, never had a problem with MAF, 192,000 km.

well considering that the fuel is injected well after the maf , how can the type of fuel have anything to do with it?

mmm yes that sounds very logical! The MAF is just after the air filter so one would have to assume that is' condition will be entirely relative to the condition of the Air filter. However I believe there is hose looping back into the clean side of the air box (I'll have to confirm this later when I get a chance), and if so, I guess that's another possible source of air contamination depending on where that hose comes from and what it contains.

that hose is after the MAF, the fouling up of the MAF is very common, but if your getting it cleaned every service, you will not have a problem, one thing people do miss is the idle control sensor, this need cleaning too, you will get better econ/power if it is clean.

I'm certain there's a hose before the MAF, because I have to remove it from the Air Filter box when changing the filter. No idea what it's for though.

hmm.. I'll have to find that idle control sensor!!

Gentleman, same problem too have to clean it, kick downs acting a bollocks to me. Been on site few times with it and we are building a cell for a landfill so tones of red dirt and dust everywhere. Think my K&N might be coming out of it. Anyway gents after a couple of bad experiences with mechanics going to clean the sensor myself , electrode cleaner and cotton buds do the trick or need to be more sensitive? Also going at the rad wash out too any suggestions, sorry about the hijack lol

Only use MAF cleaner, and never touch the hot wire with anything, including cotton buds. you only need to give a good spray into the MAF, just do this a couple of times until it looks shiny again, then redo every service, if your using a K&N or similar air filter, then don't over oil the filter, this will reduce the dirt sticking to the MAF.

Interesting comment about the fuel and MAF, I know I had a surging problem when
trailing the throttle that I had trouble finding, I changed to premium by accident
for one fill and the surging issue was cured!

I assume the better cleaning agents in the fuel cleaned the injectors.

Possibly with regards to the MAF, after the engine is switched off the fuel
vapour in the manifold might have a cleaning affect?

                      Cheers
