  • 5VZ MAF and intake Questions.

So did the service thing to day- did some research on "cleaning the MAF" with MAF spray cleaner but when i got to mine, it was very different to what i have seen...?

All the ones i have seen have a gauze and three or four thing wires while mine does not. it has a propeller like look with a small opening... shone in there with a torch and saw two very thing wires.... i did not spray in there are all as i thought i would ask here first.

    Here is the intake.

Is it advised to spray this type of MAF with Cleaner?

the when i took out the air intake pipe, i noticed that there was quiet a bit of oil in the air intake pipe... not pooling but rather coated....

as a side note i had a look at the air intake system and i must say that the air path has PLENTY disturbances.... those resonators can't help the air flow. neither can the concertina effect from the flex joints.... IS there a marked difference in performance if you change this to something far more air flow friendly... ?

if you remove the resonators, it will become drony when you accelerate, and if you remove the flexible intake tube you may start to brake the airbox or other parts, the flex is meant to be there. There will only be two hot wires in the MAF.

Ok, so if i remove the flexible intake i must replace with a pipe that has flexibility. doe the resonators reduce air flow? they must do? but ill search for some threads on this.

i just could not find anything on the MAF. yes there are two wires in there but they looked very clean when i shone the torch on them. do i just turn it so the intake side is facing down and spray in there??

Yes they do restrict airflow and somone can fill you in some more but there is a replacement kit for the intake piping that apparently helps a bit.

This is a youtube link of the cleaning the MAF of an FJ Cruser The housing is different however the sensor is the same, they also use electronic contact cleaner, however MAF cleaner is best, DO not us Brake or Carbie clean as they are too severe.

When we got our 150k km service, the timing belt got changed and the mechanic noticed how gutless our 3.4L Prado was. At first, they thought maybe it was a timing issue. He removed the MAF and noticed one side was covered in crap. After they had cleaned it, we definitely noticed a MASSIVE difference in down low power and overall power.
Thinking of doing it again (it's probably only been a month or so). What causes it to get so dirty? Is there something apart from cleaning that I should also do to stop it from happening? How long should I allow myself to do it? I'm fairly newbie to mechanical stuff but do have a general idea...

The resonators stop standing waves, removing them or changing can have a marked affect on
              engine performance.

I remember many moons ago I a set of twin weber's on a celica, they had the air cleaner
elements mounted directly on them. I decide to do a similar arrangement to what Toyota
had with their GT setup and purchased the remote air filter box and ducting.

I could not tune the carbs because of the standing waves causing the mixtures to go
              very rich a certain RPM's

If you take the resonance chambers out you really need to completely redesign the induction path.

              Cheers
